Jimd0586 Posted March 30, 2023 Posted March 30, 2023 Hi all. With Multi-threading now out for DCS, I am curious about processors. I am running an 95 9600k OC'ed to 4.6ghz on each core. I am wondering if this is going to bottleneck my computer. I would prefer to keep the same mobo if possible. If I go down that route, is it going to help me to get a better CPU on that socket? Any suggestions? I just upgraded to the 3060ti. I am trying to determine where next to put my money for the best possible budget experience. 24 Gb RAM (8x8 and 4x4) i5 9600k OC'ed RTX 3060ti OC'ed Windows 11 DCS- Steam
Hoverhog Posted March 30, 2023 Posted March 30, 2023 (edited) I have a i5 9600k with 64GB ram and a 3070gpu playing on steam with oculus rift S. my system works Im getting 40fps for now and I am getting the (CPU bound main thread) in RED so Im assuming this is bottlenecked but Im thinking i will have to upgrade in the near future. Mr_sukebe Posted March 30, 2023 Posted March 30, 2023 Strikes me that the most obvious options are: - new PC. Cost = lots - replace the 9600 with a 9700 or 9900. That means you’re only paying for a s/h processor. However, you’re only getting 2 more cores. If you can get say a 9700 cheap, sure - upgrade your RAM. This IMO is the most cost effective. Dump the 2 x4GB and replace those with 2x16GB, giving you a total of 48GB. 7800x3d, 5080, 64GB, PCIE5 SSD - Oculus Pro - Moza (AB9), Virpil (Alpha, CM3, CM1 and CM2), WW (TOP and CP), TM (MFDs, Pendular Rudder), Tek Creations (F18 panel), Total Controls (Apache MFD), Jetseat
Baldrick33 Posted March 30, 2023 Posted March 30, 2023 I have a 8600K running all cores (6) at 4.8GHz, using VR with a Reverb G1 I have just upgraded from a 2080ti to a 4080 with a big jump in performance. For most of what I do I am still seeing higher GPU frame times than CPU unless I drop the resolution down. I don’t believe the DCS fps tool when it says CPU bound. switching between multi thread and single version I get a 20-30 fps increase with motion reprojection off with the 4080, only a marginal improvement with the 2080ti as it was so GPU bound. I am not sure if I will gain much upgrading the CPU for most of the (relatively simple) single player missions I play. It might be very different for multiplayer. chev255 Posted April 1, 2023 Posted April 1, 2023 I have 9700K (all core 5Ghz) and used to have a 2080ti that I just replaced with 4090. Using the MT version and Pimax 5K+ (1.5 super sampling) I am GPU limited. So it all depends if you play in VR or "2D" screen

There is actually an easy answer, measure it. If your GPU is often or always below 100% usage you are bottlenecked somewhere else. Lowest fps for sure get a lot better the more power your CPU has, regardless of ST or MT, but also RAM can play a role. Reading you have 2 sets of RAM mixed together I dare to believe they are at SPD values, likely 2133 or 2600. If that's the case then this is indeed somewhat of a hurdle. Also 24GB is on the lower end and many new modules and anything but an empty mission will fill 24GB in 3 seconds. Use MSI Afterburner, configure the OSD and read your rig while you fly, that will tell you a lot about hardware usage.
