Re-installing skins and input configs after update

I shouldn’t have but I updated DCS a day or so ago. I’d forgotten how much of a PITA it can be for me.

I have my Saved Games folder on a drive other than C, everything worked fine. I updated and instantly regretted it when the default background loaded with the music playing. All Options needed resetting before I could see what I was doing. I have a screenshot saved elsewhere for reference when updating/resetting so followed that. Input controls are all reset and custom skins are all missing so I went searching about for those in my Saved Games folder. It’s as if DCS no longer knows where all my bits are.

After a lot of scrabbling about last night I ended up loading each aircrafts Throttle, Joystick, Rudders and Mouse one at a time and still messed some of it up. Liveries have got me baffled. They’re showing in the folders but not in the sim. As far as I can remember I’m better off not messing about with the C/program files/eagle dynamics folders and searching but I can’t remember what I should be doing? I’ve had a bit of a read but I’m still unsure. I know it should be simple and probably is but I’m super-talented at getting myself in knots when messing with it. Basically, where should I be putting custom skins and input configs every time I update?

cheers for any pointers.

It shouldn't be that way, I update my DCS everytime there is an update and it is a smooth process on my rig.

Saved Games is a special Windows folder, there is a special option to move it properly and many people instead move it by copy/paste. Moving it by copy/paste transform the folder onto a standard folder, stripping it special properties.  Like you, I have my Saved Games folder an a drive other than C ... if I inspect the folder properties I can see a "Location" tab, like this:

Does your Saved Games folder have that tab?  .. if not, then you have a standard folder named "Saved Games", not the same as the original "Saved Games" folder.

Most likely DCS is looking for them on the original "Saved Games" folder ... check if C:\Users\your-user\  still has a Saved Games sub-folder within.

The custom skins go into a "Liveries" folder, inside /Saved Games/DCS.openbeta/, like this:

The input configs go into /Saved games/DCS.openbeta/Config/input/

If possible, try to locate the dcs.log file and attach it here as it may have more clues about your problem ... the file should have today's date, like this:

Cheers for looking,

My Saved Games folder was moved when I re-installed DCS a few months ago. Having said that, it does indeed look different to yours. My Liveries folder looks how it did before when it was all good. Skins aren't showing in the Sim though.

ETA: My C Drive has no Saved games Folder. It's on Game 1 (F:)

Err... Snap Views. They're all gone too and I can't find a backup. This is why I don't like to update, seems each time I do everything goes down the swanny.

Off in search of views then...

yes, that is a standard folder that happens to be named "saved games" .. can you check if there is a dcs.log file at f:/saved games/logs/ ? If it exist, can you attach it here to take a look at it?

Most recent is from before the update. I'd been trying to bind some helis.

dcs.log 259.38 kB · 1 download

seems the saved games that dcs was using, before the update, is at "d:/saved games/dcs.openbeta/" … but I dont see that drive on your other screen captures 😐

I took the time to Not Be Me and I downloaded and Installed then teached myself how to use OvGME last month I made a Livery folder and I unloaded them Before Updating it. I do not have any mods but I want to get them setup for use. I feel like a BIG Person now like I know what I am doing and <profanity>. I need a Protection Plan from Myself so It makes me feel good now.

Sorry, but I don’t see what this has to do with this thread’s issue … you should probably begin your own thread.

Okay Sir I only posted to give the OvGME program a option to backup then install all your files that could get removed during a Update. I tend to do the file Install in the past by hand and have times in the past after updates things went wrong on my end. Maybe my fault. Not sure. Regardless Safe and Secure Install and Backup can be done with OvGME and I thought this was On topic. So if It is Not Please let me know and I will come back and Delete my posts and move on as I am being told to do.

Recently I had to use, or borrow one of my drives until I could get another. I've been copying and moving almost full HDs and SSDs. I hadn't spotted which drive was which. (D:) in this case. I'm about to try to put the drive back the way it must've been. I'll try all that and update here.

Cheers.

I left the drives copying and watched as different files refused to copy info from windows files onto the drive. Eventually it finished. I loaded DCS with the D Games Drive plugged in and nothing works. It's all brand new.

Given the time it takes to bind all the aircraft, set up literally everything all over again all for it to go to pot next time there's an update, I don't think I'll bother for a bit. I don't think it's gonna get straight without me having to reinstall everything and I'm out of patience with it.

Thanks for trying to help.

ETA: Bonus prize, All my other games are ghosted out and wont run.

I also have a multi-drive PC, and to remember which is the original drive letter of each, I set the 1st letter of the drive name to that original letter, like this:

I dont usually unplug drives, but this tip has helped me a lot each time I reinstall Windows, as I can then easily set each drive to the correct drive letter.

I completely understand the frustration, but I believe a great part of the problem is the incorrect "saved games" folder. Here is a batch file that can re-create the saved games folder on its original location (c:/users/your-user/saved games):

once recovered, use its location tab to point towards your current saved games, things will look the same afterwards, but the folder will now be the special folder it is, rather than a standard one. That should fix most of your dcs problems.

Cheers Rudel, and Feeleen for the little batch thingy.

I left it all alone and thankfully, came back to find these posts. Recreating and then moving the Saved Games folder (Properly) has it working again as far as I can tell.

Thank you and thank you again. :pilotfly:
