Trigger for Launch Configuration to Recovery Configuration

Is there more than one way to trigger the carrier crews to change from launch configuration to recovery configuration? It seems that if I fly away from the carrier and radio to come inbound that will do it. Outside of that, it doesn't seem to switch between departure and return, especially if I just launch, come around, and land again without comms.
