KC-135MPRS: Is it TECHNICALLY possible to service both types of a/c??

Recommended Posts

I believe that, in this DCS World, the KC-135 can and does differentiate between boom receivers and probe receivers by ignoring any calls from the probe equipped a/c just as the KC-135MPRS ignores calls from the boom receivers, so they are "aware" of the type of a/c that is requesting fuel from them. My question/wish is, would it be possible to allow the MPRS to deliver fuel to both types of a/c? I have no idea of whether it is normal, much less even possible, for the MPRS to service both types simultaneously in real life, but as far as DCS World is concerned, making the MPRS able to provide fuel to both types during a single mission would be a huge improvement. Thank you for your time in considering this.

Back in the day when RAZBAM introduced this tanker, it was found impossible for technical reasons.

The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.

Well, that's the reason why I asked the question in the first place. There are so many things that we enjoy in this DCS World of today (July, 2023) that not too many years and versions ago, were absolutely IMPOSSIBLE. I am just wondering aloud if there is any thought being given to the idea of allowing the MPRS to actually live up to the intended purpose for its very existence. I realize that the MPRS is a module that RAZBAM was originally responsible for but I am under the impression that ED pretty much controls what it can and can't do in terms of refueling receiving a/c. Please give this a moment's consideration.

Well if they can make it work that would be brilliant of course! 😊

AFAIK yes, the KC-135 w/ the MPRS system can service both refueling methods. I'm not sure if it can do it simultaneously, but it should be able to do it in a single mission.

For instance here's a KC-135R with the MPRS system, refueling an F-16 via the boom, I see no reason why it couldn't deploy the drogues and service aircraft using probe-and-drogue refueling, even if it's something that isn't/can't be done with an aircraft on the boom:

At the moment though, it's impossible to achieve this in DCS, it will only service aircraft that use probe-and-drogue refueling.

The problem is DCS' AAR code doesn't support this - tanker units can only service one method.

Spoiler

On a more unrelated note, the other main issue with it is that it doesn't support buddy stores as a loadout, which is why we have a dedicated tanker unit for the S-3B, despite it being identical to the regular S-3B, just equiping a buddy store - this will be especially problematic for the A-6E and A-7E, it would be a pain if they both had to have dedicated units that can serve as tankers, like the S-3B.

If ED ever gets around to doing the KC-10, there would be another opportunity to provide both probe 'n drogue and boom refueling. Since the tanker is aware of which type of receiver has called for re-join, when that plane gets in there and reports "ready pre-contact", the tanker would just deploy whichever was needed, the basket or the boom. This doesn't "seem" to be too difficult to accomplish. But I'm sure that it's not all that simple, however it would be very much appreciated!! 🤩
