topol-m Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 (edited) I`ve noticed a strange thing in one of the missions of the campaign. After being shot down i decided to check out how some of our su-25 are doing by watching them attack some ground forces, also watched some mi-24 when i saw that a Tunguska is firing a missile at one of the mi-24. How big surprise it was to watch the SAM missile heading to the heli, and missing it by passing some 5-10 m infront of it. Well, some faulty missile i guessed, but when another 3 missiles did the same i thought there is someting seriously wrong. The mi-24 was performing some wide left turn without maneuvering intensively at altitude around 40-50m and the 4 tunguska missiles one by one were coming from its left side with a speed in the moment of interception (if thats an interception at all) about 1200kmh, and all the fired missiles passed infront of this big, heavy, slow, not maneuvering, fat target which is rediculuos cause even the first missile should have blown it to pieces. Is this a unique case cause it seems to me that there is something totally wrong with missiles behavior and if such things happens in other situations its a BIG problem? topol-m Posted March 1, 2009 Author Posted March 1, 2009 Well its strange that no one else have noticed that missiles targeting and behavior in this game are a mess. Not just the problem i`ve started a thread for but also other annoying things, like at some occasions i`ve seen a fighter dodging several (3,4) modern SAM (S-300, Patriot) so easily you start to wonder "These russians have disguised a Vietnam war Sam like S-300, thats why its not working". Come ooon guys give me a break thats very unrealistic. IMO missiles should be heavily reworked for future add-ons. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
LoyalNine Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 They shoot me down plenty... But I too have noticed some very strange missile behavior. I wonder if it has anything to do with the skill level set in the mission editor. EvilBivol-1 Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 FYI, missile seekers are modeled to have deteriorating performance at low altitudes to simulate natural interference. That doesn't mean it's all done correctly though. The devil's in the details. - EB [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Nothing is easy. Everything takes much longer. The Parable of Jane's A-10 Forum Rules
GGTharos Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Tunguska shouldn't be having that problem (it doesn't have a seeker, and it was specifically designed as an anti-heli weapon) ... something to examine perhaps. Atm the SA-19 is very easily dealt with from Low altitudes.........Is there a minimum ceiling altitude it will pick you up at/should pick you up at?? GGTharos Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Theoretically at this point the way to deal with the SA-19 should be to nail it first/outrange it. It uses a radar beam-riding missile with optical backup, and the fuze is set up in a sparse way so that it can penetrate some foliage and destroy a helicopter hovering very close to trees, or even hiding behind them. As such, AFAIK there's no minimum altitude, it should probably be able to hit you even landed. More or less N/A LOMAC and most of the above is assumption from what little knowledge I have of the system. The basic rule with tunguska is: If it can see you, it can launch a missile at you. The optical backup requires the gunner to track the target manually - it is meant to help functioning if the radar is jammed or otherwise useless or INOP. topol-m Posted March 1, 2009 Author Posted March 1, 2009 If you're in a heli, and an 'anti helicopter' missile missed you, it's not skill. ;) Thats what i`m talking about. And if 4 missed you there must be a guarding angel spreading invisible shield over your heli. Dont know whats wrong but missiles at all are too weak, i know its a good, like superman, feeling to fly around and no missile could catch you but could this be fixed with a patch or something or totally rewriting missiles way of functioning (flight path, missing probability, etc.) for the next DCS? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
GGTharos Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Such things are always under revision, but there's no telling what the schedule for these fixes is like right now. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
