So I just made the switch from a Varjo Aero to a Pimax Crystal and the biggest issue for me was battery life. I think making this thing standalone was a very poor decision as the groups of people IMO that are willing to pay $1500 for a VR headset could care less about a standalone option.

I tried a number of solutions and combinations before finally finding a solution that gives me pretty much Infinite flight time in DCS without having to worry about my battery drawing down.  I made a guide which I'll post here and give you the amazon links so you don't have to waste time or money finding the right combo.

It’s weird because some people have an issue with their battery not charging in the headset. I have had the crystal for about a month now and have yet to replace the battery. It’s still fully charged and I have dumped many hours into dcs and other games testing the crystal. Needless to say still good option.

Great hint. Thank you for sharing.

Off-topic, but I am to curious to hold back this question: Why did you change from the Aero to the Crystal, i.e., why were you unhappy with the Aero and are you satisfied with the Crystal?

Hi Greekbull,

I've been doing some tests as well.

I found this combination worked for me.

Power: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07YD9V3VZ?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

10 ft USB A to C Cable: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B08GM3RCFK?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details&th=1

However, when going to 16 ft, I read it was a good idea to use an active cable.

16 ft Active Cable: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B08FVCNX14?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

This cable didn't work as well and I noticed a slow discharge of the battery.

For sims like DCS, I'd recommend a smaller non-active cable of 10 ft.  Considering this cable is plugged into the power brick, it can be plugged into a wall socket closer to where you are setup to play.

Just my 2 cents!

I loved the Aero but I wanted more FOV.  While atm the Crystal has about the same Horizontal FOV it has a much better Vertical FOV.  It also has better colors and blacks with the selective dimming.  If they nail the Wide FOV lenses that will be a big homerun.

What's the summary on this mod, need the 16ft active or it drains battery?   Do you leave the battery connected to the headset (silly question, but i assume yes you have to, plus weight would be out of wack)

Also. Is it OK to leave connected 24 7?

The original USB hub coming with the headset I put in a drawer pretty much straight away…  didn’t work. So I used another powered USB hub I had from before. And, I’m pretty sure the battery didn’t charge in the headset cause I never saw an indicator light for charging. The headset did work, but the battery drained fast, like in 2 hours or so.

Today I bought a new powered USB hub, giving a max 15w out according to specs. Now I can see the yellow indicator light for charging is lit on the headset when I am not using it, so hopefully it is charging, and hopefully won’t drain the battery so fast either while I am flying. The old USB  I had that worked but drained battery fast, gave a max of 10w out, what specs for the original Pimax is I don’t know, never used it anyway cause it didn’t work.
