The better perfomance is related to quadview rendering and OpenXR-Varjo-Foveated rendering.

I can use the (highest) 39 ppd (1200x1200 and 2192x1180) Aero setting and achieve 83 to 90 FPS.

I like to use the varjo motion projection at 45 FPS and crank up the settings (MSAA, SSAO, high shadows, global cockpit illumination, ...)

Very similar  I run vsync locked to 45 fps in Varjo Base, except I do not use Varjo Motion Projection. I like the results better without it. Long as I can maintain 45 fps and I can on my system, I get a smooth experience without the artifacts of reprojection.

I double checked and in fact I also use vertical sync only, motion smoothing was turned off.

Aero arrived today. Ordered after Varjo cut the price in half. Very, very happy with the new headset after my Reverb.
+ Picture quality outstanding.
+ Perfomance much better than the Reverb (both on my 3080)
+ Build quality and feel
+ Software user experience
+ Perfect fit with my prescription glasses
+ Adjustability
- slightly more weight than the Reverb
- Chromatic aberration (Fixed in DCS and MSFS via OpenXR Toolkit, Varjo should add that fix to their base software probably)

There's a Varjo tool to address the CA.

I'm going to try the 45 FPS VSync setting today, used your other settings "39PPD and in C:\Program Files\OpenXR-Varjo-Foveated\ settings.cfg I set peripheral_multiplier=.8, but unsure where you said "Set Focus to 1.4"  if you meant the "focus_multiplier=" setting or the "vertical_focus_scale=" setting? I set focus_multiplier=1.4 and the results are excellent, but not sure if correct?

Can you compare performance between G2 and Aero with the same megapixels per eye res., like 15MP per eye?

With the same DCS/OXRTK settings of course.

a "fair" comparison like this would be missing the point. eye tracking lets you get boosted clarity and increased framerate at the same time

Yep that is correct. Personally I have been running it at 1.3 lately with periphery at .8.

I want to know the difference between runtimes (Varjo Base vs WMR), without eye tracking obviously as DCS is just one of few games that make use of it atm.

Did you have to buy any lighthouses or controllers for it?    I have an occulus CV1 with lighthouses I might be able to use, but I'm not sure if the Aero requires them or if it just helps.

You need lighthouses for the Aero. Either base stations 1.0 or 2.0 (I heard these work better).

Not sure if the cv1 sensors will work for it.

You need one base station (lighthouse) for the Varjo Aero. I ordered the base station with the headset. You do not need VR controllers for DCS, MSFS or IL2. (The occulus stations are not an option.)

All you need is one base station, but if you only have one, tracking can get wonky if you're in a dogfight situation / looking away from the base

Before you go and buy expensive new ones though, check craigslist and facebook marketplace for HTC Vives. There are a bunch of people around me selling entire Vive setups, including the headset, controllers, and 2 base stations, for $100-150 total.

The Base stations were substantially less € from Steam than they were from Varjo, in my case €169 vs. €199...
