Upgrading from i5-4690K to i7-4790K. Worth it?

Recommended Posts

In context of DCS, would it be worth upgrading from i5-4690K (stock 3.5GHz; clocked to 4.1GHz) to i7-4790K (stock 4.0GHz; can go up to 4.4GHz)?
Both are 4th gen and quad code, with i7 having 8 threads, as opposed to i5 which has 4.

Thank you in advance.

I hate to say it but it would obviously depend on cost 🙂

if you can get a 4790k for $10, sure thing. If it's going you cost you $800 then save the money toward a system upgrade (motherboard, CPU, RAM).

(These are intentionally silly answers in order to illustrate the point...but "worth it" absolutely depends on cost).

Agreed, it only makes sense if this 4790 costs you next to nothing and maybe you independently from this have to re-paste the CPU anyway, that's a 2014 era CPU...that old paste has dried out years ago 😉

The CPU is actually still ok, I manage and built one still running 24/7 on Ubuntu Server as an Acronis Backup SSH target machine. It runs and runs and runs...

Yes - and a very well-taken point about the thermal paste!

I have a (very) long history of test data which suggests that (in benchmarks) the 4790k scores ~20% higher than a 4670k (both overclocked).

No matter how good (or poor) the 4690k/4790k is by recent standards, the 4790k would be better relative to the i5, and thus worth it, provided the cost is minimal.

Thanks for your answers. The current cost is around 200 Euros, so I guess with the today's pricing it would not really be a good investment.
The CPU was bought in 2014, but the paste is definitely not that old 😉
I don't plan on replacing my machine any time soon, so I was contemplating on giving it one last upgrade with the CPU. Everything else is pretty much maxed out, when it comes to upgrades.

200€ is way too much for a 4790k !

It should be 50€ at most

Yeah, definitely "not worth it" at 200 EUR...

(Arguably) "worth it" for 40 EUR

Definitely worth it for... <25 EUR 😄  😄  😄
