Can somebody direct me to a good description/link of padlock? I decided when I got DCS:BS that I was only going to play in sim mode in order to force myself to learn the hard way. I am pretty good now but am curious if I am missing something with padlock.

Padlock button locks your view on an object, so as you fly around it remains in the middle of your screen. You'll see a little red flag over the object you've padlocked. The game has a logic to the order in which it padlocks objects depending on the flight mode your in. (e.g. in AA mode padlock will track aircraft, in ground attack mode it will padlock tanks), how far away objects are, how near to the centre or your screen etc etc . I think there are also different buttons the padlock specific things - e.g. incoming missiles.

I use it to track airbourne targets with the HMS but at all other times prefer to control where I'm looking with my joystick hat switch.

I have absolutely no idea what you guys mean by a flag. I've never seen this' date=' how/where/what is it?[/quote']

When you padlock something a little red flag appears on it.

ok, thanks. I'll check it out. But from what I gather it is more of a cheat than a real function of the Ka-50, correct? If it is a cheat, then I'll probably keep it off and never use it.....but I will at least check it out.

its not a cheat and can never be viewed as a cheat. it simply overcomes the limitations users have without trackir. an enhanced view system. thats all.

Yep. I've never viewed padlocks as cheating as sitting in front of a flat screen cannot simulate the situational awareness that real pilots have. Trackir does help a lot and I've learned not to use padlocks ever since having Trackir in any game.

Exactly! I've never been a fan of padlock view (it tends to disorient me), but I figured that it, and other such assists, like turning off the cockpit in IL-2, were designed to give a little help to people who aren't blessed with TrackIR (which might be the coolest thing I've ever bought for my computer).

Without those assists, "situational awareness" becomes just a concept that you hear other people talk about. :P But now that I have TrackIR, I don't use any of those assists anymore. There's no need; now I can just revel in the immersion, and try to explain "situational awareness" to my friends who don't have it. :pilotfly:
