I remember when the F-18C launched the AACQ was a promising feature, but not implemented.

Is AACQ active right now, and how to get into this mode (if it's active) ?

IIRC Sensor Control Switch to the right. Works only if you are not in ACM Mode.

Senor Control Switch in the direction of the radar display when you are not in an ACM mode. It STT's the priority target selected in RWS/TWS.

Any idea on how to get out of ACM ?

Press Undesignate, or if in GUN mode, select another weapon.
