Fraps is the best way to record the footage. It runs in the background, and you use a hotkey to turn the recording on and off. It was originally made as a benchmark tool, but I've used it as a screenshot and video tool for years.

Once you have the footage, edit it together (no one likes raw footage) using whatever you like. Windows Movie Maker is surprisingly good for a free app, though I prefer Adobe Premiere, myself.

The nice thing about DCS, as with IL-2, is you can easily record a mission as a replay, and then watch it from any angle. So the best way (in my opinion) of shooting the footage would be to record the same mission from several angles, and then edit those together into a powerful, dramatic tour de force. Oh, music can be good too... add some music. :smartass:

Please DO NOT add music (sorry Ken). If I wanted to listen to music than I'd fire up an MP3 over the vid. DumbTube lets users add music to their vids within their site and is also a tool to advertise and sell these songs. Keep it simple; sometimes less is better! :music_whistling:

:D Yes, you're right. Depending on the game(s) I'm using, I like to pick subtle, suitable music (yet still have the game sounds audible). But not every video is suited for music, and certainly not all music is suited for videos.

One advantage of a light soundtrack is to cover up the audio seams in the various shots of a video; simply using game sound can be jarring, when you switch between inside and outside views, for example. A little music can help things blend together a bit better. The faster the editing, the more that becomes important, at least in my experience.

I think you underestimate the impact of music, when it's used with care. Here's a video I made a while back and then tell me that it would work as well without the music ;)

the problem is that most people don't know how to use music in videos and they just end up using a Linkin Park song or something like that

Yeah, people need to stop adding music to stuff.. I stopped watching stuff and when I do and they have music I just get turned off.

Very NICE! Hey, this isn't the video of that guy stealing the plane from Canada the other day and flying it into the US of A is it? Maybe not, huh, as I didn't see the F-16's trailing him :(

You used orchestra movie theme music in your vid(?); and not some loud head banging song like I normally see with dumtube. Well in this case it works great--and I didn't get a PoPuP within the vid about the song which was nice too.

I have used Movie Orchestra Music in the past as well with home made vids, and they help sometimes in the creation process of what and where to add scenes.

So I guess I was referring mainly to Lyrical Songs that don't fit right within a video.

Again, great work--it must have taken you a few hours to put that together, ehhh?

Music shouldn't be added. It is a main skeleton of your video. If you can't prepare a soundtrack by yourself pick one BEFORE you start editing. Music should build an atmosphere, attention in proper time, etc.

That's a given, since the music will often shape the way the video works out. Plenty of times, however, I've gone in with a firm notion of what song I want, how the footage will fit, etc, but during the project, everything changes. You have to be flexible. As Eisenhower once said, "Plans are useless, but planning is everything."

I hate it when people time their video exactly to the music. That comes off really cheesy. It's okay if the action follows the tone of each section of music (as the song gets louder and quieter, etc), but when it's too closely matched, it seems very amateurish (at least to me), which is ironically the opposite of what the creator thinks that will seem like...

Wow, i thought i was alone not wanting music when watching replays/videos...i just hate it. Especially when watching race or combat videos with nice engines or combat sounds.:)

Ofcourse there are people that can do it with a sense too, but they drown in all bad videos im afraid.:noexpression:

music plays a major role in the video and so as the editing... one can always amalgamate both the sound of the heli its self and the music together... coming back to our steer point of the thread... whatis the simplest way of making the black shark video...

When the music track is too pompous you're right :D. Soundtrack should be a backround - not playing main role. You wrote about badly chosen music. It's still a game picture - not real. Music needs to fit. Edited by Poko24

Why would a video of the real thing be any different than footage of in-game action, regarding music?

The easiest way to make a BS movie is already stated in an earlier post in this thread.

Like already was said: use Fraps and record as much footage as you need and then use an easy to use program to stitch them together, shorten the clips, add effects, etc.

I use Sony Vegas for my videos. It's very intuitively to use. I could make videos with it in no time, even tough I had no previous experience of doing so.

True. But even some loud and head banging song can work well, if is selected with care. ;)

Yeah, it did. ;)

Well, that's a matter of opinion. But I also prefer non-timed videos. ;)

I only said that from my own experience. It's hard to be objective when you're actually making a video, so I look back at previous vids I've made, and try to learn from my mistakes. That's actually the best way to learn, I'd say. Just do it and see what works for you. I make videos strictly for myself (I love editing and I love games, so this is my version of a peanut-butter cup).

Videos I've made, where the timing lines up perfectly with the music, tend to seem a little forced, I guess, for lack of a better term. Other ones I've made, where the timing is just a bit off, are in reality no less forced, but they don't SEEM as forced when you're watching them.

Also, I use mainly orchestral music (soundtracks normally), but I have one or two that use standard rock songs, and it works great as long as the subject is appropriate, and the song is not too obnoxious or anything. Like someone said elsewhere in this thread, music is meant to enhance or "frame" your video, but it should NOT distract from it.

My favorite thing to do with IL-2 videos (which is my favorite game to record) is to dig up a bunch of period music, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy and that sort of thing. Also I grab radio clips of news from the time, and then I sort of mix them up in the video. It takes longer to do that, but it works great for setting the mood.
