That is such a beauty... Mmm...

Last pic does seem to have pretty funky loadouts though. JDAM on one wing and unguided rockets on the other? Might it be from a differential weight exercise or do they actually use loads like that?

According the original description this is actually a shot over Afghanistan, so yes those are operational loadouts. I guess they are doing it to stay flexible to any target when doing on-call CAS (and lacking the capability to carry the traditional pair of different weapon types).

Ah, yeah, makes sense and explains the fuel tanks as well - they want to be on-site for a while just in case someone needs help, but also need the flexibility of being able to carry out several types of support jobs.

...and not end up like that Gulf War F-16 crew that got diverted to support a group of infiltrating commandos, and end up having "Cleared Danger Close" given to them - and all they carried was cluster bombs... (To their credit, they managed it anyway. There's a video of it out there somewhere.)

Here is question for the experts. The AV-8B+ is AMRAAM capable and is used for fleet defense by the Italian and Spanish navy. Do the US Marine Harrier pilots train on the AIM-120 and do the amphibious assault ships store them? The AV-8B+/AMRAAM sounds like a valuable addition to the fleet defense in emergency situations (for example the carrier of the covering group gets sunk by subs). But I have never seen a photo of a AV-8B+ actually carrying AMRAAMs.

Did some reading on the AMRAAM and the AV-8B+ and it seems that the Marines are not using that weapon. The APG-65 radar was primary driven by the Spanish and Italian Navy who wanted AIM-120 and AGM-84 (latter didn't happen) for their carrier borne fighter. With funding shared with Italy and Spain and APG-65 radars available el cheapo from upgraded Hornets, the Marines were interested in the AV-8B+ program primary for the increased bombing accuracy the radar would provide.

Here is some more Harrier trivia. The original AV-8B is equipped with a Angular Rate Bombing System, which consist of a small tracking camera in the nose. To attack a target, the pilot would maneuver the aircraft to put a rigid piper in the HUD on target and designate that position. This would lock the camera in the nose on that position using contrast. Following cues on the HUD the pilot would overfly the target with the nose camera staying on target. Using true airspeed, plane orientation and angle rate at which the target point moves under the plane, the computer would calculate target range and drop the bombs at the right moment. This is a simple and fairly precise bombing system. Downside is that the tracker camera needs good conditions to keep a lock on the target position. During night, in bad weather and even facing battlefield smoke and dust the tracker would not find sufficient contrast and the ARBS would fail.

Because of this (among other reasons) the USMC wanted the radar for the AV-8B+, which would allow for precise bombing in any visual condition. I guess it is a bit irony of history that today precise delivery of bombs is not really needed anymore with the widespread use of guided munitions.

Yes, this is pretty cool footage. I always wonder how narrow the space is for those take off runs on the Tarawa LHAs.

The harrier occupies one of the first if not the first place in my chart of the ugliest aircrafts ever. No offence just my opinion. Looks like some hunchbacked crippled bulging fat fly.

Yeah, I mixed the names up.

Awesome pics, nice. Especially like the one of the harrier coming down next to the conning tower. Man that looks scary close.

It seems the Marines actually started to add AIM-120 to their AV-8B+ last year.

Well, consider offence taken! :D That's so unfair! The GR5/7 & SHAR Mk1 are great looking.

Granted this incarnation with its big nose, and possibly the snoutish GR3 aren't as pretty. Still better than the Yak anyway. ;)

Horribly looking aircraft. Those big round intakes look like fly eyes. The nozzles are like tumors on its body, all over the plane including on the nose of some versions there are some bumps and humps, you got the impression it`s an aerodynamic nightmare (might not be in reality but that`s the impression). Horribly looking small gears on the wings like another pair of legs. Well words just can`t describe it well so...

Not too far from the original.

Nah, the Harrer looks great :) The big wings of the Harrier II and the sleek radar nose of the Plus added a lot to its looks. The GR.3 with the LRMTS nose was a sin though :)
