SloppyDog Posted April 2, 2024 Posted April 2, 2024 (edited) Hello, A feature that I like to use in DCS is the ability to click on a vehicle or static object on the F10 map and being able to take a look at said vehicle or object by pressing the corresponding view key (F7 or F12). It is very useful for mission making and training. However, having to enter the F10 map every time to do so is sometimes cumbersome (specially if you forgot to turn the autopilot on prior to entering the F10 view). So, what I would like to see in DCS is a F10 mini map shown on the screen while playing or viewing other objects. See the edited screenshots below as a concept of what I'm trying to convey. In MSFS there is a moving map that is useful for navigation, something similar, but without losing some functionalities for DCS. That would help new players and mission makers. Of course, make it optional to turn it on or off for those who want another tool to help and for those who thrive for full realism. Edited April 2, 2024 by SloppyDog 5

You realise, of course, that adding a map to the game that the game already has doesn't suddenly turn it into this, right? It's a UI quality-of-life improvement, not a complete rework of how the entire game operates from its very core. 4 ❧ ❧ Inside you are two wolves. One cannot land; the other shoots friendlies. TEMPEST.114 Posted April 8, 2024 Posted April 8, 2024 (edited) In an ideal world, the 'F10 Map' would be on your kneeboard. Like it would be in a real aircraft. Having a live map with units showing and moving around as you fly is like Ace Combat compared to Real Life or DCS. So, I stand by my point. A top down view of everything you'd see, live, on the F10 taking up a quadrant of the screen is too OP. Negates SA and pilotage. Edited April 8, 2024 by Elphaba 1

You do know it’s possible to control the “realism” of the F10 map in the mission settings, right? So you don’t have to “cheat” if you don’t want to. That has NOTHING to do with the OP's request to dumb the game down.

But I see no reason to force that all the time for everyone especially in single player. I don’t see much gameplay difference between a windowed or full screen map really. It’s hardly destroying the sim. 3 i9-14900KS | ASUS ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO | 64GB DDR5 5600MHz | iCUE H150i Liquid CPU Cooler | ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 4090 OC | Windows 11 Home | 2TB Samsung 980 PRO NVMe | Corsair RM1000x | LG 48GQ900-B 4K OLED Monitor | CH Fighterstick | Ch Pro Throttle | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR 5

That has NOTHING to do with the OP's request to dumb the game down. There is no request from my part to dumb the game down. It's all about flexibility. DCS already provides that with the many options on the F10 map. It's just a matter of turn them on or off. Giving options is what makes the game more accessible for those who are in the process of learning. It's the same that happens with campaigns: there are some very easy for new players, and others more complex, for advanced players. It's just a matter to find the one that is suitable for you. It would help lots of new players coming to DCS, and as I said, would be very useful for mission making. And, to top that, I really would like a 3D mission editor, like in Arma. 1
SharpeXB Posted April 8, 2024 Posted April 8, 2024 (edited) The funny thing you need the F10 map for if you are playing without external views is to taxi. You’ll have to idea where you are on the base and there are no taxi instructions. So even the most realistic servers still have your plane location shown on the map. So what’s the point in worrying about realism in this regard? So basically, you're saying that the problem you claim exist doesn't actually exist, because you have already solved it fully to your liking. So how does this solved non-issue in any way, shape or form make the OP's suggestion “dumb”? Are you seriously suggesting that a single key press the only thing that is keeping the game at the precipice of becoming a shoot'em-up? Because that's all the OP is asking for: to not press F10. Nothing changes about DCS in the process. At no point did it become more or less of an arcade game. Your own suggestion already shows why. 3 ❧ ❧ Inside you are two wolves.
