Guys can you give me some air refueling tips? I find it pretty difficult to aproach the tanker with the right speed at the right altitude, not to speak about hitting the hose nozzle. I couldn`t complete the whole thing not even once. The amount of precision needed is crazy - i`m allways faster or slower, higher or lower, left or right :joystick: One more thing - in missions when you ask for the course on the location of the nearest tanker there is no answer so i have to F10 and search it myself. WTH?

Your corrections are too big. You'll get the hang of it eventually and it'll become easy as pie.

If that tanker starts his turn, after you've been trying to connect for 10mins, just as you are about to connect ... give him a load of 20mm. He deserved it!

Hahahaha nice. Thats exactly what it did after minutes of unsuccessful attempts to connect. Next time i`m gonna kamikadze it.

I don't have any problems staying in the turn with him ...

Make sure your pitch & roll axis have enough curve... I just learned that curves are the most important thing in precision flying.

I`ve just shot down an IL-78M after it made several turns and i couldn`t refuel. I decided i`m not gonna be the only one swiming in Black sea so i made them join me, well if they survived the crash... Hope they don`t find its black box or i`m gonna be court marshaled.

You must first, try to know the tanker's airspeed, altitude & heading.

Problem in LO is that, the tankers don't emit TACAN signals. So calculating your distance from them is kinda by "feel". I also suspect that radio messages by tankers are incomplete.. In other games i played, the tanker will announce to you their speed, altitude & heading..

Anyway, i use the radar first to track the tanker, then turn it off after getting the info about the tanker.

(You should refuel with radar OFF.)

Once you spot your tanker and already know his speed, altitude and heading, approach him from behind. Start by being a bit lower than the tanker's altitude.

E.g. He's at 25500 ft, approach him at 25200 ft.. if he's flying at 250 IAS you may approach at 300 IAS but keep in mind of your distance to tanker

Then as you close in, decrease your airspeed to match his. Then slowly ascend to the boom as you get closer.

I dunno know if what i do is exactly right but that's my way of refueling in-game :) anyways.. i've only been refueling using the F-15..

I haven't tried using the Su-33 Flanker yet... although I also do AA refuels in Jane's F/A-18. US Navy aircraft also use the Drogue basket system =D

First of all, set up your tanker at a realistic refueling airspeed for your aircraft...not the ridiculous default setting.

For an F-15C that's about 310KIAS at 20000', which is a ground speed (the speed you enter in the editor) of around 435, IIRC.

For the F-15 you can also try to use the markers at the bottom of the tanker. There are two of them and they do show you, if your altitude and speed (or relative position?!) are correct respectively which way to proceed. Unfortunately I don't know if it is explained in handbook and I cannot properly explain it myself. Just remember it from another flight sim, F-22 ADF or something. But those markers are fairly easy to understand. Just try cruising below the tanker a while and you'll get the point.

They're not even necessary though - all you need is to maintain the correct sight picture.

I find it harder following the markers and kind of run in by feel.

I use the awacs to get heading and distance, then radar approach to get speed and distance checks, then all by sight afterwards.

I always fly form off the left wing roughly just behind the boom then ease over to line up.

The most important thing is to fly a reference off of the wing or belly, not the boom itself as it can seem like it's moving a lot. If you're close enough (i mean real close) it will auto-hook in. Be aware of this as it can suprise you.

I then fly very lightly with small corrections and watch out for any turns.

If you've set up your own mission, you should know when these are coming up.

I learned to tank in F22-ADF and also by watching a lot of videos like the Canadian F-18 training series Jetstream.

And practice, practice, practice...

Then try it at night with bad weather, that gets interesting!!

Ok i`m not getting it completely. So far my attemts have been partially successful. I`ve managed to connect to the hose and get some fuel, but i`ve encountered another problem: in the last few metres i`m closing in to the end of the hose with 490 kmh while the tanker is flying with 489, so i`m able to connect, but after the moment of connection i`m not able to turn off auto throtle (auto speed) and to make it 489 (i`m playing FC 1.12b so i`m still in control during refueling process unlike LO 1.02) - so what happens is i`m getting more and more close to the tanker with this 1 kmh more than its speed to the point where to avoid collision i have to disconnect. WTH?

Don't use autothrottle.

I just found an excellent tutorial for A2A refueling fir the F-15 and A-10

http://flankertraining.com/ironhand/Video/Aerial_Refueling-Flying_Boom_System.zip

Original link here:

Text from the page:

Instructor: Ironhand

Video rendering of the original tutorial. What you see here applies to the A-10 and F-15C as flown in both LOMAC and Flaming Cliffs.

This tutorial introduces you to the world of aerial refueling. The refueling aircraft is a KC-10A. The tutorial covers the Boom refueling system, approaching the tanker, and connecting to onload fuel.

Should the video not play, you need to install the XviD codec. For some reason, the sim did not install it during the installation process. You can download it here: XviD-1.1.0.
