mytai01 Posted May 24, 2024 Posted May 24, 2024 (edited) This is more of a function of the 3D model. The real F-4 throttles have to be pushed to the left through a detent to be advanced into AB, and pulled back to the right to go back to mil power. They actually move to the left and right at the transition point. I know this because I was playing with an Navy F-4N "gate guard" that was taken down and given to a museum. lxsapper Posted May 24, 2024 Posted May 24, 2024 I don't know if this is correct or not for the modeled Phantom, but the fact that you played with an F-4N and it was like that, does not mean it is correct for all other versions. The aircraft went through many changes througout it's life. Even the E is a very diferent from first airframe to last. Diferent equipment being put on etc.
Stickler Posted June 15, 2024 Posted June 15, 2024 (edited) I would like to add that contrary to what the manual says (Engines - Heatblur F-4E Phantom II), the WSO cannot currently shift the throttles from OFF, but can enter the afterburner range. Edited June 15, 2024 by Stickler 1

Throttles are pushed outboard and forward to engage reheat (Afterburner). Applies to all Phantoms. 2 - - - The only real mystery in life is just why kamikaze pilots wore helmets? - - -

I can say I experienced the difficulty of working the throttles in the museum F-4N. I couldn't get one throttle to change the afterburner/military power setting. It was stuck. There's a few things the WSO cannot do with the throttles. While the WSO can push the throttle forward out of the OFF detent, the WSO cannot start the engines as only the pilot throttles have the ignitor buttons. The WSO cannot put the throttles back into the OFF detent as that set of throttles do not have the required fingerlifts. The levers only prevent you from selecting OFF by mistake and inadvertantly shutting down an engine, hence the fingerlifts on the pilot throttles, but no special action or interlock is required to push them forward from the OFF position. The WSO throttles cannot go into afterburner as they cannot be pushed over into the burner detent, but if the pilot selects burner with their throttles, then the WSO can use burner. The WSO can pull the throttles back out of burner however.
