AI Huey wont land for troop transport

I was playing around with some SP missions getting Hueys to pick up troops using the embark task option, then dropping them off at a target one, but the ai huey wont land any more, it stays hovering about a metre above the ground, so the troops never board.

Are the troops clear of the designated landing area, no slope or triggers met for landing.

Troops are close enough but not in danger of getting squashed, no other triggers used, other than the ME extract task, the ground is flat (apron of airfield as well as flat field tested). If you replace the Huey with an Mi-8 then it functions properly as the Mi-8 actually touches down which triggers the troops to board. Also works fine with the ai CH-47 and the UH-60D, Its just the Huey that never manages to go that extra metre and rest its skids on the ground.

I have a track for you @Flappie

i set up a new test mission with 3 hueys on the afghan map and now they are working fine! The only difference is ni MIST or CTLD script loaded up. I will do more testing to see if thats the issue, but I realise thats not a Huey bug then.

Hi @Moxica. I cannot load your track because it contains mods I don't have.

Thanks!
I will make a copy of that mission, and replace (CurrenHill) mods, and test it agein.
(You really don't have the CH mods?)  :)

There should not be any mods now. And I've replaced Chinook with Huey. Same result.

All enemies must be dead before it arrives. So the no-landing is at the end of the mission.

The Huey is asked to perform a "Combat landing", which consists in a fast landing with a very low approach. This cannot be done here, but the AI keeps trying since it was asked to.

Untick the "Command landing" box and the Huey will land.

Thx, Flappie. Your investigating skills are impressive!  🙂
What are the conditions for a combat landing?

THanks you Flappie 🙂 I guess with (new) combat landing option ticked you have to make sure the helo has enough time to get low and come in horizontal, not a steep approach. that should be possible by placing th touchdown waypoint a sensible distance after the touchdown waypoint marker (does that make sense?)

You're both welcome. Here's some more info (I expect it will be in the manual someday):

  • Combat landing off = You want a standard precision landing (e.g. on a landing pad) with no time constraint. If there's no OPFOR in the area, that is what you want.
  • Combat landing on = You want the pilot to avoid being hit as much as possible, in a combat environment. The pilot will break speed later and will keep a low altitude approach before landing. He will also depart quicker. If you want the helicopter to drop troops on the battlefield, try it.

"Direction after land" is supposed to be used for standard landings, not combat landings. Right before touching the ground, the pilot will rotate the helicopter to the set heading. Mostly for aesthetic purposes I think.

I tried running these 2 modes in parallel with two ai Hueys, troop pick up and drop off, lik a timed assault course, combat on racing against combat off. sadly I cannot say I noticed any difference, they both landed back at virtually the same time and spilled thir troops out together. Maybe the distance from last waypoint to land or disembark poont is really critical to get this to work properly?
