What are your suggestion ? Meta 3 ? Pico 4 ? Get a used Quest Pro if you can. I got mine for £300 on eBay and have never looked back. It has eye tracking so using QVFR massively reduces GPU load. Pico 4 is also a good choice and a bargain price. I have a lot of experience with both of these. I can't really comment on Q3 other than second hand. 9800x3d - rtx5080 FE - 64Gb RAM 6000MHz - 2Tb NVME - Quest Pro (previous rift s and Pico 4). diego999 Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 (edited) I went from a Quest 2 to a Quest 3. Happy so far. It's a natural evolution, better almost in every sense, but it's not some amazing jawdropping experience. It's good enough for the price. Best thing: clarity from edge to edge of the image. Worst thing: not as comfortable and battery doesn't last as long as the Quest 2. Edited July 31, 2024 by diego999
kablamoman Posted July 31, 2024 Posted July 31, 2024 My progression: HTC Vive -> Valve Index -> Bigscreen Beyond -> Quest 3 Quest 3 is definitely the best of the bunch, although lack of direct DP connection does hurt it a little. I think to make it competitive requires a good head strap and wireless via Virtual Desktop, which does mean added cost for the strap (and additional battery) and potentially network hardware to get you up to WiFi 6E standards. At that point you may want to look at the Pimax Crystal Light as the price difference won’t be that substantial.
xwhiskey Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 I'm also seeing the last days of my reliable G2 going end of life soon and have picked up a new Q2, but found its day to day reliability in staying connected to pcvr nearly non existent and bi-weekly meta software patches fix and then break it again the following week as others keep seeing here. just can't trust the Q2 to simply come up, stay up. short of buying the $100 link cable, i'm just not confident the brands headset reliability. Those running quest 2 or 3 headsets, how many of you run link cable vs the wireless function? and its reliability in either cases or keeping connected to pcvr? i wish it would, I'd get a Q3 in a heartbeat, but meta just keep being meta and messing with it. i'd pop for a pimax crystal light but i thought i read something something needs stream base sensor stations to do 6dof? i may be mistaken. The G2 was a great headset. Cheers. ZeroThreeFour

Changed it for a reasonably cheap but good quality one, neved had problems again. This was last year. I hear you on the Meta updates. I find them pretty annoying, so I just block them using the method posted on these forums and only update the software whenever I want to. Lately there have been no great improvements or important added features, so no harm in staying behind. I tried VD and it's great but never could reach the same clarity as I enjoy with the cable connection. If VD had a wired option it would be amazing, but it's impossible for now due to some propietary Meta shenanigans, or so I read.

The G2 was a great headset. Cheers. I recently went from my G2 to a Quest Pro (found a sealed one on eBay for the same price as a Q3). I'm very happy now but at first impressions I was a little bit disappointed. I had my G2 in a place where it was running quite nicely at 60hz with DFR. As you know the Quests run via Link (wired or AirLink) or they can run wirelessly with Virtual Desktop (paid app on the Meta store and free desktop app required). Now, everyone has their preferences with how to run their VR setup and I'm not calling anyone wrong or right but personally I wasn't too impressed with the Link experience. I found that the eyetracking wasn't fast enough, I'd often notice the blurry non-foveated region in my peripheral, which ofc you can mitigate with less aggressive settings but it wasn't what I hoped for. I've also tried flying with ASW which I understand a lot of people like but I found it very 'wobbly' like the scenery ripples at times. Contrary to this flying in Virtual Desktop is a night and day improvement for me. With h264+ and VDXR selected even with a bitrate of 200 it's a really nice experience. In Link you can set up to 960 as a bitrate if you have a GPU for it (with a 3080ti I get sound stutters if I crank it that high) and it's worth noting that bitrate x with h264/h265 in Link isn't a direct comparison to bitrate y with h264+ or other codecs available in VD. Again, personal preference but VD's reprojection SSW is nicer to my eyes than ASW in DCS. Eye tracking seems way faster, I rarely catch it out. Overall everything feels much smoother. Getting the best out of VD does require WiFi6. However you can get a decent, cheap router to use as dedicated VR router to get the stability you'd want. I currently don't have a dedicated router but I'm looking at that now since I'm so much happier with VD. Either the Quest 3 or Quest Pro are good options imo. The lenses are great. Just consider the requirement for a $50 router, some money to improve comfort on either model, battery pack is likely too. You'll want the supersampling cranked up to the right in the Meta app. This makes it look great across the lens yet the G2 is still sharper in the sweet spot, especially when looking further away but the benefits of edge to edge clarity with the Quests are a fair trade off. TLDR - Glad I moved from G2 to Quest Pro, I think 3 would be a great choice too. - For me VD > Link by a decent margin - Consider additional costs for comfort, battery, WiFi6 1
RealDCSpilot Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Since yesterday, the PSVR2 with PCVR adapter. I have it in testing currently and it shines. Fills the gap the Reverb G2 has left.
