BitMaster Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 Planning on a new monitor with AMD Freesync since mine only does true Gsync. After many hours of research I found this screen https://rog.asus.com/de/monitors/27-to-31-5-inches/rog-strix-oled-xg27aqdmg/ in german or https://rog.asus.com/us/monitors/27-to-31-5-inches/rog-strix-oled-xg27aqdmg/ in english. My question is the text readability, it is for sure superb for gaming but some reviews mention the sub-pixel layout was a topic that you either dislike if you sense it/see it and others don't bother. I am eager to hear 1st hand experience for daily work, Mail-Surfing-Teamviewer sort of thing. Any feedback welcome I want to stay at 1440p, 27" but I am open for suggestions regarding type and brand, budget up to ~700€ Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X
LucShep Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 (edited) That really looks like a superb monitor, but yeah.... Subpixel Layout is RWBG (some color fringing around text). But, even so, may be such a small issue that makes no difference, if that's the monitor that you're really looking for. I like the aproach and format these guys use on their reviews (best in the biz, IMO) - and the text-clarity section is always important to look at: https://www.rtings.com/monitor/reviews/asus/rog-strix-oled-xg27aqdmg Hope it can it help in any way. BitMaster Posted August 23, 2024 Author Posted August 23, 2024 Thanks LucShep, That's the review I read when I stumbled across that SKU, indeed very deep and covers all aspects. Since I read a lot on the screen I may wait and look a bit more at other models. They all seem to have 1 thing I dont like, either 300cdm only, curved, TN panel or something else....LoL need to invest more research Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X
LucShep Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 (edited) If text is really so important, then none will really be a good choice (that would be a 5K Samsung ViewFinity S9 or Apple Studio Display, or equivalents). If you want an OLED 1440P gaming monitor, and your only real negative point towards it is the Subpixel Layout, then I'm afraid you'll encounter a similar issue in all of them. AFAIK, they're all either RWBG, or WRGB, or triangular RGB. So, none is "wow, great" on text. Personally, I don't think it's such a big deal. It's nothing like BGR (aka "inverted RGB", much worse - I know because I got one here) and you get used to it very quickly. And if you don't, you can also circumvent the problem more or less. With apps such as these, for example: Better ClearType Tuner: https://github.com/bp2008/BetterClearTypeTuner Mactype: https://www.mactype.net/ If viewing/testing before buying isn't an option, getting it from somewhere where return policy is somewhat "easier" (Amazon?) could be a solution. BitMaster Posted August 23, 2024 Author Posted August 23, 2024 OK, I see. Thing is, I am gonna buy it from wholesale and the return policy for B2B is virtually not existent. As a dealer you should know what you order, kinda like that mindset. The Glossy panel is another thing I am not sure if it works as intended. I have a pretty dark room but what if I move to another room where there is more light, etc... Jesus, I wish they only had 3 models 200-300-400 Euro . That would make my life easier LoL I play alot of FS22 these days and FS25 is due in November with better graphics etc.. So I thought that's a reason to give my TN panel to my son, he's an FPS gamer anyway and doesnt care about colours too much yet...and I can enjoy DCS Sunset flights and my FS25 Harvest in OLED quality, I really like OLED since I had my first OLED on my iPhone, it is SUCH a difference in colours and black, it's another level than TN. I personally prefer a glossy panel to a matt panel, because the "matt treatment" (term?) usually dilutes a bit the color accuracy and almost gives a "milky" tone to things (some may be less sensitive to it but I really dislike it). At least in my experience with 5+ year old models, not sure how it is with latest "higher end" ones. Buuuut... of course, the downside of a very glossy screen is that any sort of light behind you will glare/reflect on the screen imediately. The upsides are substancial though (IMO ) - dark to light (and vice-versa) colors transitions get to be better, more so if in a darker room. And that makes sense on an OLED. That monitor you've chosen is not "mirror glass reflection" like old ones used to be, these high-end ones now have reflection and glare reduction (it's almost "mid term"). 7 hours ago, BitMaster said: Jesus, I wish they only had 3 models 200-300-400 Euro . At least you aren't hooked on the bigger screens like I am... I can almost ear myself doing all sorts of funny whining sounds when looking at these latest 48'' OLED monitors... and their price tag. *sigh* LOL Indeed, OLED is especially expensive but.... aaaaawww ... that crisp image, the zero latency, beautiful colors perception, and dark tones that are really dark (as should be). With a monitor with such specs in addition to OLED tech, you'll be blown away, guaranteed. If that's the size and specs you want, and you can afford it, I'd say "hey, you only live once..." BitMaster Posted September 6, 2024 Author Posted September 6, 2024 After days and nights looking for a screen I ended up ordering this one: https://rog.asus.com/de/monitors/27-to-31-5-inches/rog-strix-xg27acg/ It's not OLED but other than that it fulfills what I want for half the price, 359€ incl. taxes Will be here next Tuesday from amazon ( again cheaper than all my wholesale contacts ). Will report how I feel about it once in use... Ramstein Posted September 11, 2024 Posted September 11, 2024 I have a Sony OLED TV I use 55" really nice... ASUS Strix Z790-H, i9-13900, WartHog HOTAS and MFG Crosswind G.Skill 64 GB Ram, 2TB SSD EVGA Nvidia RTX 2080-TI (trying to hang on for a bit longer) 55" Sony OLED TV, Oculus VR
BitMaster Posted September 11, 2024 Author Posted September 11, 2024 So I got that screen yesterday and so far I am pleased with it. Colors and contrast are for sure not as good as OLED but is sufficient for my needs, actually HDR is great and the colors in general are MUCH better than my old TN screen. For that price, 359€, it's quite good imho...and finally I have a linux screen again since my old one refused to work with an AMD card under any Linux.... that's the downside of true Gsync I guess. Anyway, I can recommend this screen, no obvious downsides so far, fast, clear, bright and no tearing from 40-180Hz, all I need.
