Hey guys, I’m looking at upgrading my GPU to use with my quest 3. Right now I’m rocking a 3060 TI and my CPU is a 7800X3D. I was wondering if there’s that much of a difference between the 4080 super and the 4090 when it comes to quest 3 VR and whether either of those two cards will allow me to crank the settings on high for everything or should I just wait and see what the new 5000 series brings when they come out and purchased that.

The 4090 is around 30% faster, but obviously, the price difference is more than that.

I would personally not get a 4090 right now, unless money is truly no issue, since the depreciation is going to hit you hard early next year when the 5090 comes out.

That’s what I was thinking but hearing rumors that the 5xxx series was pushed back

It was pushed back, but it'll be released in less than 5 months (supposedly before CES 2025, which is in early January).

It is also rumoured that, this time around, the RTX 5080 will come out first (maybe with the RTX 5070 as well), only later is the RTX 5090 expected to be released.

I'd wait for the RTX 5080... but I'm not you. 🙂

If you're not using it for VR, I think the RTX 3060Ti (with limitations, I know I had one) will at least hold on somewhat fine until then (update DLSS and use it in the game!).
But if it's for VR, yeah it's more complicated.

I play DCS in VR with the quest 3 I’m still learning the F16 so I can wait. What kills me is the jitter and the blurry text. I’m still trying to dial in the setting for the 3060Ti

Blurry text would make me guess the PD is set a bit too low, then again, Jitter makes me think the PD is set too high

These settings did 'Ok' for my 3060ti with HP G2 (But I believe the Q3 is a bit more demanding?)

My thoughts about 4090 vs 5090 or 5080.

Im sure, the 5090 will surpass the 4090 by a big margin, but my guess is, the 5080 will land around the 4090 perf.

But I guess NV will ask big time for a 5090 and also the 5080 will be at least where the 4080 was (~1200).

Now that NV is the big fancy AI-provider for our future ( or at least Jenson thinks so) and AMD isnt competing on the top, they will ask as much as they can for their products. After all NVs friendlyness is only towards shareholders and not gamers. And why should they sell a big 5090-chip for less money, if they can ask much more in an professional product for it?

My guess is 1999 for a 5090 with reduced availatbility and 1299 for the 5080.

This does not make the 4090 a good product, but maybe the sanest among otherwise insane ones.

That seems unlikely, since they had to reduce the 4080 price to $999 for it to sell. Why would they make the same mistake with the 5080?

The leaked specs suggest that the production costs for the 5080 will not be higher, so a price increase is not needed. And I don't see how they again give poor price/performance increases like with the 40-series.

I think that you are reasoning yourself into the card with the highest depreciation after release of the next gen.

No, Im not, even though I have one. Its also an insane offer, Id not recommend to anyone.

I just wanted to caution some people thinking NV has gotten more consumerfriendly. They never were and with recent developments, which made NV briefly the most valuable Company, they for sure have not gotten modest. So Id expect pretty high prices for the upcoming 5080/5090. If you are so sure, plz put down your guess, so we can compare afterwards!

How about a 4070ti Super? Cheaper than a 4080, 16GB VRAM, decent performance, enough for VR if you don't go nuts with the settings.

If I’m going to go to a 4070ti super I would probably get the 7900xtx I don’t use ray tracing so I would prefer the larger vram. Or I just wait and see what nvidia and amd next gen bring

Hi.

Im not up to date, but until last summer AMD 7xxx had problems in VR, meaning it underperformed quite a bit. The 6950XT I had before was fine, and I planned to upgrade to a 7900XTX. But since AMD for 9 months after the release was unable to solve their VR-problems with the 7xxx-cards, I went over to NV.

Hopefully AMD has sorted those problems out by not. As I wrote Im not up to date with AMD-drivers anymore.

Somehow I haven't seen any benchmarks where the memory differences between AMD and Nvidia seemed to make a difference

(If anything, any differences appear to have more to do with which GPU brand a developer optimized for)

Regardless of the smaller bus-size and memory amount, it seems that Gddr6X has quite some performance over regular Gddr6

-Note: compared to a 4080(s), a 4070TiS vs XTX is not apples-to-apples

Just wanted to post a pricing-leak from moores-law-is-dead-youtubchannel to support my guesses made above.

5090 1999-2499 "with the emphasis on the higher end"

5080 1199-1499

NV as we know it at its cosumerfriendly best!

^^ oh boy....

That MLID guy has been know to leak a lot of inaccurate info for the clicks but, pricing has been one of the things he usually gets right. :dunno:

With Nvidia all alone at the top, that's unfortunate for the consumer - prices on RTX 5000 series will still suck, unfortunately. 😑

Except for his Raptor lake pricing. Or his A770 pricing.
