FC modules "Landing Navigational Mode"

Unless I am missing something obvious, my pet peeve with the FC "LANDING" submode of the NAVIGATION mode is that there is NO indication of WHICH airfield you are pointing at.  This "simplified" mode is actually less useful than it would appear.

In the Flankers, there is at least a Visual representation of the positions of the airfields/carriers in the MFD, but, e.g. in the A-10A there doesn't seem to be any way to tell.  I saw a chart/kneeboard with the numbering of the airfields, but that does not seem to correspond to what is shown in the HUD for A-10A, at least.

Am I missing something, or do you just have to use the F10 map or kneeboard Map to ball park the bearing and distance to the desired airbase and then cycle through until to find it?

There's a way to work with it. Call your airfield ATC (cheat #1: the list is sorted by range, ascending) they will give vector and range to the fixed approach point (5nmi from runway) and also tell you active runway number. The HSI of F-15C and A-10A will show the course number of the selected runway and the range - find and match 🙂 You can call the ATC any time and ask for the vector/range info.

Russian aircraft have the airfield numbers in landing mode (afair) so go by the list.

Your worst case is around Tbilisi but it is a problem IRL too when aircraft don't land where they were suppose to due to airfields so close together or on the same course, esp. in low visibility.

And of course it's best when you know where you are.

The Mig-29 does, (maybe SU-25 as well) but the Flankers do not any longer (if they ever did),  or I am not looking in the right place (neither on the HUD nor the MFD  have numbers like Waypoints do).  The Flankers are the only Russian aircraft I generally fly, so limited to the "cheats" you point out with them as well as the A-10A, F-15C. Was hoping there was something better.

LOL, I have trouble with distinguishing Tblisi-Lochini/Soganlug/Vaziani even in full fidelity aircraft  🙂

Yeah, the ID numbers are shown only for MiG-29 and Su-25T but all aircraft have the HSI with course and range. Su-25 has only range but you can still see the course line and read the runway direction.
