I searched the forum and internet and I do not quite have my head around compression artifacts, so just what they are.

I run an i5-12600K, RTX 4080. Using VDXR and 6E router at 2400 mbps.

I have a fairly good image and 70-ish fps, but something I am getting in the headset are a flickering in the image, a flash, but not of light, the image gets a quick dark jagged visual. This happens just a fraction of a section at random, but can be every few seconds, or maybe not until after 10 seconds, and sometimes several flickers within a few seconds. It does not matter what aircraft or area.

So I wonder if this is these artifacts, or something else. A different sim nevers get this issue.

Doesn't really sound like compression artifacts to me, but hard to say without seeing it.

The compression problems I notice, at least when using AV1, is that when the image gets a bit too detailed for the bitrate, you start to lose finer details, and textures start to look blotchy and blurry, or otherwise "softer" than normal, and you will even start to lose a bit of color in the scene. I tend to notice it most when flying at high speed just over the ground, with the grass and trees flying by -- sometimes the compression can't quite keep up, and tree textures become blotchy and the grass starts to blur lose a bit of its color.

@johnbowzer I would agree with slughead. It sounds like latency issues, probably the decode latency. Please can you post a screenshot of the VD overlay?

It sounds like your latency is high. What bit rate is the encoder set to? If set too high in Virtual Desktop, I would have similar problems. Dial it back to default and see how it goes.

Exactly, I had to lower it down to 500Mbps.

What do your latencies look like with a reduced Bitrate?

All seems and feels smooth, no issues what so ever.

ps: but I'm on Quest Pro, which I think shouldn't make any difference.

Thanks all.

In VD streamer I use AV1 for Quest3, with 'automatically adjust bitrate' checked.

Then in headset settings are Godlike, 72fps, default 200mbps, sharpening 100, SSW disable, SnapDragon checked.

I can mostly get 70fps. Tried a few ingame settings, DLSS, and just DLAA or TAA.

Those changes do not fix the behavior. I fired up Elite Dangerous for a bit and do not see it there. Seems to be a just DCS thing for me.

Gunna keep digging. Man, simulating is stimulating.

Oh, and in the VD Performance overlay I get about 45ms for latency.

A screen capture of the overlay would be really helpful.

What's the PD setting in DCS? If it's above 1.0 with Godlike on your i5/4080 you are probably pushing beyond its capabilities. I would leave it at 1.0.

Also, try a step down from Godlike. You may be aiming too high with an i5-12600k / RTX4080. It's always worth trying the VR preset in DCS to make sure you're not overloading the CPU and then building up from there until problems begin.

I think these random blinks are a DCS thing, it doesn't happen in other games. I use cable link and from time to time, there are times when it doesn't, it flashes to black and then the image returns. I have also observed that in the latest Meta Quest Link software the flickering is not seen but the hourglass appears and suddenly disappears.

Here is F18 over Marianas and over Navada. With some aricraft over other maps the game ms will be as low as 2-3 ms.

I get this occasionally with link if the bitrate is set above 500.

Actually it happens to me too.
