Can we expect anytime at all that we will get real time weather into the sim?

Without using 3rd party scripts which injects real time weather into a mission file?

Or just manipulate the weather through lua scripts? (wind, temperature, wind direction, turbulence)

Real time weather doesn't seem such a great idea for a military flight sim unless you intend all your flying to involve A2A above the cloud base or dropping gps standoff weapons from the same height.

(...& if that's the case what difference does real time weather make?)

Be a shame to log in for a mission only to discover it was postponed due to weather

That's life when you're in need of a real life simulation. 🤷🏼‍♂️ 😄

Excellent comment! 👏🏻🙌🏻 👍🏻

Military sim also includes CSAR operations with choppers. You can't postpone a SAR mission if you need to evacuate a sinking ship for instance. Most of our birds in this sim is day/night all weather.

Real weather wouldn’t be mandatory. Just an option available to those that want it.

Honestly, not having real world weather implemented in 2024 is kinda embarrassing.

You should never do anything just because all your friends are doing it.
😉

In the context of DCS it’s just a gimmick - there are a lot of improvements that could be made to the simulation of weather in game that would add more than being able to tell yourself “oh look - it’s hot and sunny outside the cockpit so it must really be hot and sunny in Kabul (Mosul, Nevada, Shiraz etc)”

Maybe before realtime weather they could implement realtime sun and moon positioning - force western hemisphere players to play during work hours 😉

Great, you have an opinion, but understand that’s all it is, nothing more. With that said, I happen to agree with you in that there is so many individual things that should be improved re DCS weather.

My intention when arguing for real world weather however, is that it would require all the improvements we often hear, localisation, dynamics etc, etc, yet require them to be implemented in a wholistic, realistic manner. My fear is if we just look at weather improvements individually, then ED will implement individual features in a way that makes sense to them, but seems completely illogical to the end user, or doesn’t integrate well with other weather elements. (Let’s face it, they have a history of this.)

If every improvement is made with the end goal of having a real world capable weather system, then we have a higher chance of getting the weather system most of us want, even if you chose not to directly use real-time as you go to setting.

On this we can agree…

the issue, as far as i understand, is not so much having to rely on external mods, but that the weather can't be changed during mission time. and THAT would really be a game changer, as you could f.ex. run an attack in VFR, but by the time you get home the wx would change to IFR. of course mods could then also inject realtime wx, if you wish so...

That's a fair point!

I think you can change it mid-mission with scripts, unless I'm misunderstanding.

If I remember right, the RotorHeads multiplayer server would run some script that pulled real world conditions, which could be a bit of a pain at times. When the Mi-24 first came out, the de-icing system wasn't fully implemented yet, but the server was configured with the real world weather in Georgia, which at the time was some miserably visibility and icing. Needless to say, I found out about the de-icing system mid-mission, as I was suddenly underpowered and slowly losing lift.

But the other issue was that the weather might change in the middle of the mission, and you would go from decent visibility and no winds to a really low cloud layer and higher winds, which could potentially be a little heavier than you could handle.

It's been a few years now, so it's possible I'm remembering it wrong.
