Flying on a G1 Reverb Pro.

Cable connector recent issues and the impending demise of WMR making me think its time to start thinking about what comes next, but there doesn't seem to be an obvious sub-£600 answer.

The only real contenders seem to be PSVR2  or Quest 3.

Anybody know of anything on the drawing board with OLED screens, pancake lenses and a wired Displayport connection ?

Not at all sub 600 quid price point…I would suggest the pimax crystal light.  I went  Varjo Aero myself  last year when they were having a sale.

This should  really start with a conversation about the person price point and how much they are prepared to spend on rig and HMD, VR Sim flying can be a very expensive journey.

Well, the announced Pimax Dream Air would check all those boxes, but comes at a 2000€ pricetag +taxes (you do the math what that is in £…definitely more than 600 though).

So the obvious option would be the Q3, I think. If you come from a G1 or G2, I can almost promise you, that you won‘t be disappointed. No more fiddling with adjusting for the sweet spot and you can even just glance at something and be able to see it without blur.

I myself came from the G2 and went for a second hand (still sealed in the box) Quest Pro. I love the eye-tracking with QVFR. Maybe something to consider as well. They were not a huge success and sell at moderate prices (in your given range) on the second-hand market.

Its great that we have Pimax in the marketplace to cover different price points and technologies.

Coming from a G2 to a Quest 3. Glad with my choice and thrilled with the wireless aspect of it.

Playing DCS wirelessly ?   (thought it required SteamVR and USB link cable - or have times moved on ?)

I hear ya.  Trouble is , once you've tried VR flying it's hard to go back  ( although it is sometimes nice to see a realistic monitor cockpit instead of sitting inside what looks like a cardboard pop-up cockpit  🙂   )   .   For me,  it doesn't seem sensible spending £1000+  on a headset when I've still got an RTX2080 feeding it.

With a Quest you don‘t need SteamVR at all.

You can use QuestLink via USB cable or via WiFi.

Or you could use VirtualDesktop via WiFi as well.
In either case it should be a fast and stable, ideally a dedicated, WiFi connection.

Virtual Desktop app on the Quest 3, and Virtual Desktop streamer app on the PC. I dont need to use SteamVR or the link cable. And I have Telus Wifi 6, so very quick Wifi speeds.

I tried virtual desktop, but it rendered my keyboard unusable.  SteamVR not only allows me to use keyboard, but there's a livestreaming app (LIV) that allows me to see comments from youtube, twitch or wherever I stream.

Cool. By chance, is your keyboard wireless? But yea, I have read, that sometimes Virtual Desktop just doesnt work with their setup. Whether its the choice of codec they are using, or leaving the app on auto to choose between VD or SteamVR. Glad that SteamVR works for you though.

Q3 - the standalone games like Dawn of Jets, Warplanes:Air Corps, Contractors etc.  are so much fun too. I think the graphics are amazing considering it's a mobile device. Heaps of online players to team up with or play against. Take the headset with you anywhere and play single/online through your phone. Amazing for it's price

Use the Oculus Migraine tool (free) or Quest Game Optimiser ($10 aud) to improve the graphics even further.

edit - $799 aud for the 512gb version at the moment
