So I’m guessing by now you’ve all seen the incredible 1980s Mirage low level flying footage filmed in Chad on YouTube:

I was thinking this would make an excellent map, with all the Cold War jets in the region during Operation Épervier. I know that it’s another ‘sand map’, but I think the unique landscape would bring a different vibe to the table. I mean just look at those mountains!

Anyway, just my thoughts. Be interested to hear others views.

Unfortunately, what you’d get is another sand map without those very distinctive terrain features.

I don’t know why you wouldn’t put them in. They’d be a focus, surely? In the same way that Ugra put all that detail into all the cities in the Germany map, you could do the same for all the sand sculpted pillars and mountains. I doubt polycount would be an issue.

Perhaps, that way, you could make it work. It’s just not something that could be done as terrain.

The method DCS uses for terrain sucks at making good looking mountains. You could get away with hand-modeled rocks as objects, but you probably couldn't do a whole mountain range that way without killing performance. Cold War Germany shows that it's quite possible to do a lot of detailed objects, but the sheer scale of the mountains would probably be an issue.

The problem with this map is that with the exception of some Gazelles, most air assets were based thousands of miles away from the action.  The map would be huuuge.

I would still buy it though, and have made several Épervier/Ouadi Doum missions using Syria or NTTR as stand-ins.
