It is not. The autopilot is merely a "hold" autopilot, with "path hold", "altitude hold" and "altitude/heading hold" being your 3 options.

The heading bug can be used as a kind of reminder what heading you want to be flying (you can set runway heading prior to takeoff or prior to an approach, or the heading for the next route leg so you have an immediate fallback in case your avionics fail, or maybe the center of a final attack heading cone for the next attack). But it'll always be up to you to fly the aircraft so its heading lines up with the heading bug on the HSI.

Well, it's a 1970s design that was continually upgraded, but there's only so much that can be added.

Back in 1990 on the way to Operation Desert Shield, pilots had to cross the Atlantic with no autopilot whatsoever (this was way pre-LASTE). That must have been fun...
