I was wondering if there were any procedures for using the NAV lights for start-up, taxi, and in flight?

I realize this will differ between operators, so I was thinking along the lines of how they were intended to be used, so how the Russian's/Soviet's/WP would use them.

Flash on the ground and steady in flight, for example?

The same for the landing light?

Would this be turned on for approach during the day like western aircraft do?

Varies widely by years and regions. Some places practiced different light flashes before engine start for example. As for landing lights it's common to use them 24\7 on takeoff and landing.

Worldwide rule is to:

1. Turn on taxi light when aircraft is intended to move for taxi, turn it off during stops, while waiting without move. Turn it off also while taking parking stand in order to save marshallers eyes.

2. Turn on landing lights right after you hear the clearence for take off, it shows everyone else that you will take off.

During approach, turning on landing lights usually depends on procedures of particular aircraft. For example on civil soviet aircrafts they turn on landing lights at about 120 m (I hope I still remember good value) height or right after getting landing clearence whichever first (Tu-154M, Yak-40).

The taxi lights are turned off in a MiG-29 when it starts to taxi towards the runway, when it enters the runway and lines up for takeoff, then they turn them on, and when the MiG-29 lands and starts taxiing to the parking position, then they turn them off. There is a process for why, because they limit the use of taxi lights because they are very expensive and extend their lifespan. Regards.
