panther265 Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Greetings, first off awesome sim of a great heli. My main gripe is with the shkval targeting system. Fair enough it doesnt have 'auto lock targets' while scanning but surely they could of added black/white hot image so i dont have to squint looking for targets in bushes etc..I feel for the real heli pilots using such a system Any thoughts?

This may be totally off, but I recall reading a thread about this same thing before. Essentially the reason is that the Shkval camera doesn't detect anything in the IR band of EMR, only visible light. Greyscale TV better than color for threat identification? IDK about that. Going to shut up now before I start talking out my ass, which I kinda already was.... I wish the Shkval had IR capabilities though, that would be sweet. wickedpenguin Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Of all the things I wish this helicopter had, a fully working FLIR is top on the list. It would make targeting so much easier. Of course, I know the real machine doesn't have it so I don't want it in this sim. The developers are just emulating reality. However, you guys at Kamov, what the hell were you thinking? On that topic... a cool Apache anti-insurgent FLIR video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjQLX05WE2I [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Boberro Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Yes Shkval works only on contrast spectrum. This mean no IR at all, but in real life there is image processing function which is not presented in game. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ
panther265 Posted September 14, 2009 Author Posted September 14, 2009 "However, you guys at Kamov, what the hell were you thinking?" Wicked penguin, I totally agree Yes Shkval works only on contrast spectrum. nemises Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 yep...though TBH, I think the (comparatively) low-tech solutions in the KA50 are what makes it 10X more interesting ... go the steam guages!
DocNobby Posted September 14, 2009 Posted September 14, 2009 Absolutley! I always thought the longbow simulations feel somewhat arcadish! You magicly see all targets on your radar, have perfect IFF and can fire hellfires at multiple targets. Now, that may be realistic (don't know) but it's centenly not a challange (in my opinion ofcourse)!
panther265 Posted September 15, 2009 Author Posted September 15, 2009 Yes, longbow series you just had to keep low and blow away whole battalions of armor with 'ripple mode' hellfires..is that legit in real apache??it would of been nice if kamov included FLIR and then the developers would of added it to the game..time to upgrade kamov!especially the 486dx4 (check the bios bootup) abris computer!! is the ka50 in the game, spec'd up to the latest version in real world?
AgentWhite Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 A 486dx4 is about four to six times faster than the microprocessor used in the space shuttle, the AP-101S :) Older processors can be manufactured to withstand a combat environment, plus they have been used for so many years that any bugs might have been ironed out, haha. I wonder what processor the longbow has, but I guess that it will be crushed by your PC :) But hey, they don't need to run windows on top of it!

Thing is, there is basically no 'real' version, the ka-50s in existence have been used as testbeds for lots of different stuff and therefore i do not even know if there's two helis of that type that have exactly the same equipment. Good, fast, cheap. Choose any two. Come let's eat grandpa! Use punctuation, save lives!

As Sobek said there were many versions of Ka-50. Orignally in DCS there should have been Ka-50 without ABRIS (yes instead there were paper IIRC), but we have upgraded Ka-50 with ABRIS (Russians set this instead paper in about half amount Ka-50s when upgrade program started). There were so many tests with various equipment, Merkurij, another FLIR system, IR countermeasure ect. Due of lack of money and changed conception of battle chopper (two pilots instead of one) Ka-50 is what it is - only for low combat area. For modern battlefield we have Mi-28N and Ka-52. -Bazong- Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 I think it would be pretty cool to have an alternative version of the KA-50 with FLIR or LLTV, RWR and chaff, just as a "what-if" version.. If they release this 3rd party aircraft creation thingy-ma-bob it might be possible..?
panther265 Posted September 16, 2009 Author Posted September 16, 2009 Boberro, thanks for the great input. It makes sense that if the ka-50 is designed for 'low combat' it has 'manual' shkval. what differences does the ka-52 have?(to ask maybe a dumb question, how come the ka-52 wasnt incorporated into the game) , & mi 28n(which i thought was nowhere near as strong as the kamov)

One pilot having to do all the work is actually quite stressful. Two pilots makes life much easier. Targeting can be done by one person while the other focuses on keeping the helo ready to evade and does all the navigation and flying, but with the ability for the gunner to take control if required.
