There have been many posts on this forum about the difficulties of flying missions in fog and bad weather. Reduced visibility and night flying are really the world of instrument flight. It requires a lot of knowledge and training to be proficient at it. But, one concept that will help anyone at any skill level in any flight situation is "prioritization". Simply put, you just need to Aviate, Navigate and Communicate. "In that order".

First, Aviate: Fly the aircraft. Keep it under control. If you loose control the other two points don't mean anything. Second, Navigate: Aim the aircraft where you want it to go, both horizontally and vertically. Fighting a military aircraft would also generally come under this heading.

Third, Communicate: Send and receive instructions, information and orders. But, only when the first two points are under control and you have time.

When you loose control of one of those three points you have to simplify the situation until you can sort things out. Aviate, Navigate and Communicate will take the pressure off and give you a method to help you stay out of the bushes.

IgorMK,

I just finished Georgian Havoc. Bravo! The campaign moved in a logical manner. All of its elements were varied and challenging, which maintained freshness and interest from one mission to the next. Aside from the few minor weather and enemy strength issues already mentioned on this thread I think you did a great job, especially considering the short amount of time you had to produce it. I hope you'll keep writing campaigns in this style. Thanks.

Is Georgian Havoc v1.1 (corrected version) available? If so, where?

Thanks

I'm on the fifth mission now and loving it!

Not to rag on the fourth mission anymore, but what triggers the friendly fighters? On my first couple of tries, I was shot down trying to flee the Hinds. Then on the third try, I get a decent lead, we suddenly have fighter support (~3min into the mission,) the Hinds are shot down, and life is good! Did the friendly support fail to be triggered the first couple of times?

Edit: If you want, I'll have some time this next week to clean up the English in the mission descriptions. Would you like me to?

Edit 2: Voice glitch report: When Sibir 1 is supposed to say, "We're expecting a lot of enemy activity," only the text appears.

Edit 3: Upon further inspection of the thread, I realize that I didn't download the fix for mission 4. Oops. Ignore above comments.

Edit 4: Further comment: Mission 6 is pissing me off to no end. I can take out the first ambush, although not without the convoy suffering fairly heavy losses. Out of 4 attempts, though, they've only radioed for the other convoy once. When I get to the second ambush, I run out of Vikhrs because my stupid AI wingman is too much of a blithering idiot to take anything out before dying. Arg!

Hey guys, sorry for my late respond, but lately I’ve been very busy, and honestly using my free time on BS/FC2 MP. :D

Thanks for nice comments regarding the Georgian Havoc campaign. I’m glad you like it. Since I’ll have a bit more relaxed schedule, I will try to put some efforts and finally release v1.1. Yet, I’m not brave enough to announce a date. ;)

In the fourth mission, friendly fighters are triggered when (guess what) Hinds are destroyed. I just wanted to live you on fire on your own. There were many complaints about this mission, and that is the reason for making it a bit more easier, so after the modification I think everything is OK.

Pyro1588, thanks for your offer for doing the grammar.

That is very generous of you, but this job is already done by military-aviation-experienced-native-English-speaking-person, so corrected briefings will be present in v1.1

Regarding the missing voice-overs, it has been reported before, but so far I don’t have explanation for that problem. It could be codecs issue.

About the mission 6, try to employ different tactics. And just a brief tip – it is not essential that all your ground units survive the first attack.

This campaign is made to be part of "Official ED Campaign Creation Competition". You can see all the details in the campaign introduction and briefings. There is total of 15 staged missions. We tried to make good briefings and interesting and non-repeating scenarios in each mission. There are a lot of recorded communications, and like in real life you will have to listen carefully because, sometimes you will be retasked in air from your original task. Also you will have to take a good look at the mission briefings, since many crucial information are exactly there.

I wouldn’t call this campaign “expert difficulty”, but in some missions you will have to be able to enter new point in your PVI-800 based on received coordinates (very easy thing to do), or edit a new point in your ABRIS according to received bearing and distance from a known point (also easy to do).

Therefore, I would recommend that you always have a paper and a pencil with you if you fly this campaign.

I hope you will like it and enjoy in it (or you can completely hate it ), but still there may be bugs in it, since testing time was extremely short, and when you test something you made your self, a lot of bugs can pass undetected. Therefore, be free to write your comments and notes, and if needed, V1.1 of the campaign can be produced.

Team participated in the campaign:

Igor “=MAF=Mongoose” Chkorov

Ilija “=MAF=Loaded Dice” Panov

Dragan “=MAF=Dragan” Cvetich

Stefco "=MAF=Hercul" Tashovski

You can download the campaign here:

http://rapidshare.com/files/31869366...Havoc_v1.0.rar

If you If you encounter some problems or find some bugs, please report it to me. Thanks!!!

can u fly this campaign on game mode?just asking because it says in the post i m quoting that you ll have to enter some coordinates in the pvi and i m still learning how to use that thing.

Posted

Probably you can fly it in game mode, but you will only get simplified flight model. Regarding to extensive operation of PVI and ABRIS, you will have to learn it. Otherwise, you will not be able to find your objectives in some missions.

can you tell what to listen for and what buttons to press because i don t understand this helicopter communication bearing blank blank blank.i wouldn t know when to put somehing in the pvi.

You will easily know when you have to do something (like go to new position defined with coordinates) by listening to radio communication. Remember that your callsign is “205” for the whole campaign, and listen for the given instruction. I also recommend that you have pencil and paper with you all the time, since some things here are not pre-planned, and you will have to write them down.

Regarding the “how-to” operate PVI-800 and ABRIS, the best way to do it is to read next chapters in the manual (you can find pdf version in Doc folder of the simulator):

COCKPIT CONTROLS Section:

- PVI-800 Navigation Control Panel

ABRIS Section:

- MENU/PLAN Sub-mode

- MAP/ERBL Sub-mode

I hope this helps.

All right, I finally skipped Mission 8. I tried it close to a dozen times and just could not suppress the nigh-invincible enemy forces.

I tried Mission 9 once and then skipped that one as well. A combination of aggravation with the ground crew (had to take off and land on the runway before they'd give me NVGs,) the ever-annoying "fly in formation with someone for 15min and then promptly lose once you reach the target area" factor, and the difficulty of trying to fight anyone or anything at night in the Ka-50 made this mission nothing but a pain. It's a cool concept, but it's hard enough to fly escort for an Mi-8; doing it at night just makes it plain aggravating.

I'll try Mission 10 when I get back from work tonight.

Again, this is really a great campaign, but some of these missions are just plain unbalanced and angering. I look forward to the next version of the campaign with some of these problems fixed =)

Okay, I just finished Mission 10. That was awesome! Using the heavier anti-ship ordinance was a blast! I accidentally dropped the first missile in the drink (launched too low, I think) but the second one hit its mark perfectly. I admit that I cheated to find the enemy ship's location.

When I hit the ship, I was told to abort because F-16s were inbound. I thought I failed, but when I got away and quit the mission, I progressed to the next one in the campaign. I never was told that the ship was successfully sunk (though I watched it on camera.) Possible bug?

Hi pyro,

Thanks for all your comments on the campaign! I’m glad you enjoy it, and at the same time, I’m sorry to hear that some missions are frustrating you.

I’m working intensively on v1.1 of the campaign, where most of your remarks are already been done or listed for changes. Regarding to some issues on enemy strength it is under testing, since after patch there is difference in AI behavior, and during the creation of the campaign the biggest problem (and time spent) was on balance of Red and Blue AI. Now I have to test it and make some changes for the version 1.1.

Anti-Arty

Perhaps it's just my computer, but even with fog density 0, units aren't rendered until I'm within 4km, which is WAY too close for my comfort. Not sure how to handle this mission since I can't even see the enemy until I'm within spitting distance and they're shooting at me.

Specnaz rescue

Okay, this was a total and complete gem! This is probably my favorite mission to date. Do you actually have to land on the roof? I presume so. At any rate, I did okay on my first try except for denting up my nose gear pretty badly. Landing at night is challenging, after all. When I got back to base, I landed but didn't receive any sort of "mission complete" message. I quit the mission, proceeded to the next, and was promptly shot down. When I came back to the campaign, it dropped me off at the specnaz rescue again. Not sure why...

Supplies cut off

It'd be nice to be told in the briefing that the target is above the fog. At any rate, I found them but was disappointed by my target points. They pointed in the general direction, but none of them were that close to the enemy units. I was shot down by AAA that I couldn't locate the first time. The next time, I took out all 4 defenses and was happily mopping up the camp with my 30mm when my wingman (who was on overwatch) suddenly reported an air defense and a SAM launch. I punch flares and glance out my left window to see an impending bad day. A split second later, I'm drifting through the air, enjoying the breeze as the few pieces that are left of my copter fall to their doom. My wingman follows shortly. It seems a tad unfair to suddenly spawn in a SAM so close to the camp after I spent so much time cleaning up air defenses. I know that you could theoretically have an SA-8 sitting there in the fog with the radar shut down, but it still seems a tad unfair, especially considering that you're sent in a chopper with no RWR.

I know that the realistic scenario debate has been done to death, but I'm of the opinion that if you're going to send KA-50s in against enemies with radar-guided munitions, we should at least have some kind of support. SOMEBODY should be flying SEAD, otherwise we're just sitting ducks ripe for target practice.

Still, I'm enjoying the campaign and eagerly await 1.1! Oh, and I can't emphasize enough how TOTALLY COOL I thought the Specnaz rescue mission was =D

Edit: Command Post Attack

I'm not sure what's going on here. When I get close to the village, trying to target the TP I entered into the PVI simply points the shkval straight down. I can't find the correct house to attack. I've flown twice now and hit the wrong building. Any idea what's going on with my targeting system? Is this a programmed failure? Or am I doing something completely wrong?

Edit 2: It appears my TP question has been discussed but not completely answered. I'll try to figure out a workaround.

I'm enjoying the campaign - very thorough and realistic feel to the progression. I have yet to finish the fourth mission (alert protect the airfield). I'm able to get the bird airborne just before the hinds pass over but no matter what tactic I try one of the hinds locks onto me quickly and I'm shot to pieces. I tried just running, launching a vikhr, fixed cannon sight, etc. but they all end the same way and very quickly.

What's a good strategy for surviving this? Run and get separation or pick one and target? I'm curious how others have approached this.

Thanks,

ripple

How do you play this as a campaign? I downloaded the rar and extracted the files. I put them in the campaign folder and the mission folder. When I go to the campaign selector menu, only the deployment, and georgian oil wars are available. I can play the missions as single missions through the mission menu. This has been fine for me, and not sure what playing as a campaign would do except prohibit advancing till mission success. I have only played the first 4 missions.

Mission 1. While starting up, I noticed an explosion at the mi8 helipads before they landed. Mig 29s tail number 11 nose dives into their pad area.

Mission 2. Wanted to light up the instructor on my first try. Prove to him I could attack a target. "You call that formation flying?"

Mission 3. Damn those Mi8 are fast. I loitered at the lake wondering if I should take out the soldiers or not. I decided not to, and by the time I was starting home, I got lectured on radio because I was not with my flight. By the time I spotted him, he was clearing the hill on the return. I need to learn how to climb mountains better because I am always on the fringe of rotor crash with the yellow warning lights above my head.

Mission 4. My file date in my folder says 12.9.9 and I found it easy enough to win. I shot down 2 Hind one time and 1 on my "I can do better" followup. I have maintenance equip 4x gun pods and I go Hind Chasing. Those pods do not allow you to really trace your fire up to the hind. You basically have to get in close and aim where you think you need to. I blasted one Hind while blowing over his rotor going a bit too fast. Last second I plunged the nose down and squeezed. Almost collided with him. Looked back and he was spiraling down. As for the bug. I had one emergency land to the 11 oclock from your takeoff position. I was wondering why I was not getting the order to land. I had seen the carcass while flying in circles and figured I would go finish him. Instantly got the radio message to RTB. Another damaged one flew to the 8 oclock and landed on the tree covered hill. He blew up but had no smoke or fire when landing so I suspect it was hydro failure. Either way, the trigger worked I guess.

Great missions so far though.

He has to stay close to the first helicopter, even while using the shkval and finding the target etc, he should fly so that he is still close in formation. Good luck

Or locate the target as fast as you can and launch asap. By the time my vihkr was 10 seconds away 200 told me to get in formation. Missile hit and he said, great work.

Strange...

If you paste all the missions and the .cmp file in ...Missions/Campaigns you should be able to see it in the list of campaigns.

Anyone else having this problem?

Plus I must point out that couple of missions are updated:

http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=818547&postcount=97

http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=825115&postcount=104

and v1.1 of the campaign is in work (some polishing and bug cleaning is made). Also I've noticed different AI behavior with BS 1.0.2 so I've started to test and adjust all the missions. Unfortunately due to extreme lack of free time it is going very slowly, but I'm not giving up yet!

Hi Igormk, I just installed spanish 1.12 patch. Could that the problem? All the missions and the .cmp file are within Missions/campaing and I cannot see it in the list of campaigns.

By the way, I just tried the first mission, as a single mission, and I´m astonished. You really got an incredible environment. The mission is alive, the Mi8 pilots voices are amazing. You just feel as if you really were geting into a Hot area. Please, try to help me cuz I really would love this like a campaign, not only as sinlge missions.

Is it necessary to create a flder for this campaign within missions/campaings or not?

Many thx for your help but specially for the campaign.

Very Immersive

Feel that I have to thank and congratulate the dev of this excellent campaign. I'm only half way through but am thoroughly enjoying the very immersive atmosphere and story line. I've just rescued the downed pilot but got taken out by an AA gun on the way back - managed to task my wingman to take the AA gun out before I ejected and took the long walk home. Don't know if it's a bug or not but I couldn't get the ground crew to fit NVG's before this mission so done it in the dark!

Looking forward to tonight so I can retry!
