Squid Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 I have a PCI SB audigy 2 Value. Is there some benefit using it on my upcoming P55 rig instead of the on-board Realtek ALC888 ? What is Alchemy and why it has been used by some with regards to Lockon Thanks :) . i7 880 | HD 7870 | 8 Gb DDR3 1600 | ECS P55H-A | OCZ Vertex 2 180 | Intel 330 180 | WD 500 AAKS | 2x WD 2T Green | Enermax Liberty 620 | CH Combatstick & Throttle | TrackIR 3 | HP ZR24W | Windows 7 x64
104th_Crunch Posted December 14, 2009 Posted December 14, 2009 Your Audigy should sound better than any onboard audio, but you won't notice it much unless you have a good amp and speakers. When Vista and then Win7 were released, Microsoft removed support for some older "direct sound" functions for surrond sound used in games. Some older games, including Lock On, used this direct sound support. In Lock On you will get buggy sound with a Soundblaster Audigy and Vista/Win7. Using Alchemy will bring that support back and fix the problem for older games.
Squid Posted December 14, 2009 Author Posted December 14, 2009 I don't have an amplifier, just 4 speakers (two of them being some old Yamaha i believe to have some sort of amplification in them) I am concerned mainly about performance issues, sound stealing resources at critical moments as well from CPU ... is there a difference here? Win7 (64) are ok with onboard chipsets regarding full effects reproduction on older games? . i7 880 | HD 7870 | 8 Gb DDR3 1600 | ECS P55H-A | OCZ Vertex 2 180 | Intel 330 180 | WD 500 AAKS | 2x WD 2T Green | Enermax Liberty 620 | CH Combatstick & Throttle | TrackIR 3 | HP ZR24W | Windows 7 x64
104th_Crunch Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 Your right, you will have less CPU utilization from sound if you use an Audigy sound card instead of onboard sound. The difference will be small though. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/big-sound,370-15.html Your onboard sound may have the same incompatibility with directsound as the Audigy. For example some Realtek on board sound needs special drivers similar to Alchemy.
Squid Posted December 15, 2009 Author Posted December 15, 2009 Thanks :) wondering if the possible (or plausible) performance or smoothness gain from using the Audigy instead of the on-board chipset is worth putting the PCI audigy back to use with the new rig .. That article is dated back to the age of Geforce pro and Athlon 1.2 ... :D . i7 880 | HD 7870 | 8 Gb DDR3 1600 | ECS P55H-A | OCZ Vertex 2 180 | Intel 330 180 | WD 500 AAKS | 2x WD 2T Green | Enermax Liberty 620 | CH Combatstick & Throttle | TrackIR 3 | HP ZR24W | Windows 7 x64
104th_Crunch Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 lol, yes an old article, but it gives you an idea. I would suggest sticking with your Audigy. I have one as well and it still is a great card sound quality wise.
Squid Posted December 15, 2009 Author Posted December 15, 2009 (edited) One thing is that i would probably need more free space in my new case, like to make it as uncluttered as possible and maximize airflow as well. The other is , that audigy indeed has great sound but the only times i could tell a difference is when playing music with the creative media player .... *puzzled* Edited December 15, 2009 by Squid . i7 880 | HD 7870 | 8 Gb DDR3 1600 | ECS P55H-A | OCZ Vertex 2 180 | Intel 330 180 | WD 500 AAKS | 2x WD 2T Green | Enermax Liberty 620 | CH Combatstick & Throttle | TrackIR 3 | HP ZR24W | Windows 7 x64
fitness88 Posted December 15, 2009 Posted December 15, 2009 alchemy is not supported by 64 bit Vista or Win7 From what I read, Alchemy is not yet supported by 64 bit Vista or Win7.

104th_Crunch Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 Yup, Alchemy works for me with Win 7 64.
fitness88 Posted December 16, 2009 Posted December 16, 2009 good to know As quoted: http://connect.creativelabs.com/alchemy/ALchemy%20FAQ/Home.aspx Q9. Is there a 64bit version of ALchemy? Not at this time. There are very few native 64bit DirectSound3D enabled games that would require a 64bit version of ALchemy. I guess they did.
S77th-konkussion Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 (edited) is it just me- or is there nowhere I can download Alchemy? I've been on creatives site for an hour- no download link.. Nevermind.. damn. Trying their best to hide it. Edited December 17, 2009 by S77th-konkussion [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=43337&d=1287169113[/sIGPIC]
104th_Crunch Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 Well if you have an Audigy, download this pack http://nomoregoatsoup.wordpress.com/2009/12/11/daniel_ks-sb-audigy-series-support-pack-3-6/

104th_Crunch Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 Yes, start the Alchemy program, then add Lock On to the list of games. There is a spot to enter the path to the exe.
S77th-konkussion Posted December 17, 2009 Posted December 17, 2009 ahh thanks. Just like setting up HL, then [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=43337&d=1287169113[/sIGPIC]

OK tried to add LOMAC to the Alchemy List. It says unable to copy files. Here's what I have: I have left the registry path blank-- I have C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Eagle Dynamics\Lock On\LOCKON.EXE in the game path line, What about "install into subfolder" (check box and path) Install into root and subfolder (check box) Settings: Buffers (4) Duration (25) Max voice count (128 ) (CHeck box) Disable Direct Music Edited December 17, 2009 by S77th-konkussion [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=43337&d=1287169113[/sIGPIC]
104th_Taipan Posted December 30, 2009 Posted December 30, 2009 I have this Problem: After install Vista Service Pack 2 (32bit) on my new Maschine I have this sound problem, when I start into the server mission i have a loud sound (like afterburnersound) when i am in the cockpit with engines off. Sometimes it goes away when i start with the plane, but 90 % it s still there when i fly, not good to handle with this Big loud sound in flight . When i make a single mission it´s not there. Perhaps you have a TIP for the VIA driver? I use the latest VIA VT1828S & VT2020 Audio Driver V6.0.1.7300a for Windows Vista32 (WHQL). I hope in 2.0 the Bug is fixed.

Did you get everything sorted? Your issue in your screenshot is that you included lockon.exe. Just leave that out.
S77th-konkussion Posted December 31, 2009 Posted December 31, 2009 Thanks man. Will try this. [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=43337&d=1287169113[/sIGPIC]
Squid Posted January 1, 2010 Author Posted January 1, 2010 Happy New Year to everyone :) Special thanks to Crunch for the support in this thread :) Someone remind me, will the FC2 be OpenAL sound ? or DirectSound? (is BS DirectSound or OpenAL?) Supposedly, Audigy 2 works with OpenAL and games that use OpenAL ? . i7 880 | HD 7870 | 8 Gb DDR3 1600 | ECS P55H-A | OCZ Vertex 2 180 | Intel 330 180 | WD 500 AAKS | 2x WD 2T Green | Enermax Liberty 620 | CH Combatstick & Throttle | TrackIR 3 | HP ZR24W | Windows 7 x64
S77th-konkussion Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 Crunch- the game moved to the right column- Thanks. What if anything - do I need to do with the check boxes? [sIGPIC]http://forums.eagle.ru/attachment.php?attachmentid=43337&d=1287169113[/sIGPIC]
104th_Crunch Posted January 3, 2010 Posted January 3, 2010 Yes, it should go to right side. I just left all the setting at their default which worked fine for me for sound. Saying that, I kept getting Lock On crashing to desktop with graphic memory leaks, so I went back to XP dual boot for Lock On.
