Unicorn0578 Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Hi Guys, Okay I managed to record a 4 min clip in FRAPS !!! :D But the avi file seems huge at 1.7GB :helpsmilie: I am now uploading to youtube and going out for a good few hours so hope it's finished by the time I get back. Their limit is 2GB so I was lucky the file was ONLY 1.7GB lol I'm guessing I need to record in lower resolution or different file format. What would you recommend and how big should a 4 min file be for good enough quality to see all the detail? I will post the clip link in my trimmer thread once it's complete if your curious and any comments would be great!!! Thanks
Eddie Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Don't try to upload raw FRAPS footage. FRAPS doesn't compress the video footage it captures to help prevent performance issues. You need to edit the footage using video editing software (Windows movie maker is fine for casual users and will do up to 1080p) and once you have a video you like publish it to a format appropriate to your intended use. The file size of a edited video will be a LOT less than the raw FRAPS capture.
Waldo_II Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 (edited) I think you are underestimating how big 1.7GB is. What Fraps does is it makes a perfect, uncompressed, lossless copy of what was displayed on the screen. An exact replica, pixel for pixel. If you have a screen that is 1440x900, and you record at 30fps, that is 39 million pixels per second. 2.3 trillion per minute. 9.3 trillion for four minutes. It is also like having 7,200 full screen captures in a single file, uncompressed. Fraps is for recording raw data in its purest form. The output file is meant to be manipulated and finally compressed in the end. It isn't a tool like X-Fire or WeGame where it records, compresses, then uploads. If you want to make a high-quality video, like GA's trailer for DCS, you would use Fraps. Anything casual, you use something else. Your four minute video should be like 200 megabytes max. You really should compress it. Think about this: when you watch a video on YouTube, you have to be downloading it at a rate equal to or faster than the rate at which you play the video. If you can download 1.7GB in four minutes, then that might be an acceptable size. In reality, you may only be able to download 90MB in four minutes (varies greatly upon connection speed). What you will want to do is experiment with video editors and various compression algorithms. The most popular is mpeg. I use Sony Vegas, and I use XviD's MPEG-4 codec. AustinN360 Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Why use fraps to record? You know Xfire can do the same job and also upload your video to your own xfire profile web page? Not only that but you it also allows to show others what you are doing ingame through live stream, aswell as a built in screen print and upload to website option. Check it out at http://www.xfire.com/ Link to my screens on xfire: http://www.xfire.com/profile/routemaster/screenshots/
Maximus_G Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 What Fraps does is it makes a perfect, uncompressed, lossless copy of what was displayed on the screen. An exact replica, pixel for pixel. Actually the traditional fraps codec is not lossless, only near to that. It's a low compression codec. They've added the new feature to produce video in different format (lossless uncompressed RGB) in version 3. http://www.fraps.com/news.php Finally, we are aware that more and more people are putting Fraps to professional use. We've added a new option to force lossless RGB compression to ensure that you always have the highest quality video output to work with. We hope you enjoy Fraps 3!
Achurro Posted January 14, 2010 Posted January 14, 2010 Hi ! In the place of FRAPS, use the 'camtasia'.. look for it on google.. it works with your resolution.. and better fruits. For the editing, I use Sony Vegas 7... the actual version now it's 9 ¡¡ I think!! There are a lot of tutorials in youtube, to accomplish your 'mission'.. Good luck [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]

Thanks For recording Games on PC: I use full version of fraps (still Version 2) for recording. Then I cut and do what I want with Maxic Video Deluxe. Then I convert (encode) the Raw Videos with Virtual Dub (with what you also can cut and do many). (freeware) Codec: h.264 Codec (K-lite Video Codec Pack) and Mp3 Sound Codec.(freeware) For me the easiest way to make HD Videos in a superb quality in very small size. Example: Klick me (Only 20 MB File Size @1600x1200@25fps and keep in Mind that youtube cause much(!!) lower quality then it really have) Edit: Original File: Klick me (Download) Edited January 17, 2010 by Duke49th [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] 49th Black Diamonds - DCS & Falcon BMS Online Squad
Tuna-Salad Posted April 6, 2010 Posted April 6, 2010 I dont know why all the hate on fraps here.. The file sizes are so large because the program cannot record and compress on the fly. Just run it through a movie editor of some kind and the file size will get a lot smaller. When uploading anywhere bitrate is the important thing. Just save it to a 7,000,000 - 10,000,000 bit rate and itll be original quality at a fraction of the file size
Kifaru Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 I render as .wmv through Vegas using pretty much the default settings. A 4 minute edited video would come out at around 50mb. I then upload straight to youtube and get full 720p options once the video has been processed. It's also a great size and quality to host elsewhere if people want it on their hard drive. Windows Movie Maker allows you to save as .wmv so if you have raw HD fraps footage you want to upload to Youtube, put it through Windows Movie Maker and save as .wmv. Depending on the length of your raw footage you'll get a fantastic quality to size ratio. [sIGPIC]http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/4178/vaafbannerum6copyyj2.gif[/sIGPIC]
Woots Posted April 7, 2010 Posted April 7, 2010 (edited) I had the same problem. I've got the demo version of fraps so can only record 30 secs of footage but it was HUGE. So a buddy turned me on to anyvideoconverter. You can get it here http://www.any-video-converter.com/products/for_video_free/ Use this to convert it to a MUCH smaller size. Here's the result I posted on youtube http://forums.eagle.ru/showpost.php?p=872167&postcount=1 Edited April 7, 2010 by Woots [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
