Bombs and cluster pods

Is there any real use for these? From my limited experience (7 combat hours) I have seen no time that i would want to use them. The carpet bombing idea in a chopper seams suicidal and dropping dumb bombs seems like a total guessing game and also suicidal. Has any one used them effectively?

As for whether they are useful - not really. I've never had a good reason to fit them to my helicopter. Possible exception would be the KGMU dispenser, but I'm loath to overfly targets in something that can only do 300km/h - I'd like the speed of the Su-25 for that. :P

 

There are air forces that do use this tactic, though. The Lebanese airforce has converted it's UH-1's with three hardpoints for regular iron bombs, for example.

Bombs/Dispensers on a helo are only useful for murdering people - ie. they don't have so much as a 9mm pistol between them, and therefore aren't a threat at all, or for structures that have no value, and are therefore completely undefended. So, guess my answer.....They are a GWOT - that's not 'Global War on Terror', but 'Giant Waste of Time'. :)

You need a mission where the poor insurgents are packing to the gills with Tunguskas and SA-10 air defenses. Probably taking out a bridge ahead of a column of tank or something similar. The KGMU(AT) dispenser is a little weird since you'd only use it on semi-dangerous targets, maybe if you get high enough that MBT guns won't shoot you and there's no AAA around.

Since bombs are rarely used/deployed by attack helicopters the only reasonable explanation why its available is...

 

Consider that attack helicopter are, in many cases(if not most), under army(ground forces) command. When Air-Force can't assist, due to various reasons(no avail aircraft), in all requests and the tactical situation allows it(little AA defenses etc etc) a helicopter may be able to deliver unguided bombs/munitions.

 

Now, some may wonder why rockets aren't used since its easier be deploy them and are more precise when used by a helicopter... I think that a FAB-250 has more destructive power and can deliver it quite concentrated.
