Hi,

Im going through the training of the A-10 Mavericks tut. I find it extremely difficult to aim the cursor at the target while in flight. at first i used my hat switch to move the cursor but it wasn't accurate enough. So ive changed it to my mouse (which is no very realistic). When in flight, i've got to descent 5 degrees to get the target in sight. But to aim the cursor i must let go of the stick (something i really dont want to do at that stage (sams)).

What are your techniques to lock targets?

Without sollutions there aren't any problems

I usually lock it so that it sticks to the ground in the area near a target and the slew it with the thumb-hat or analog-thumbstick of my X52 onto the target. It kind of sticks to the target rather easily I'd say.

Often I lock it up really far away in almost level flight and the release weapons and head in another direction before even getting close to the targets maximum range.

use the K they stand off at 8 miles the D are for 4.Miles or kilometers can't remember which ATM. like Boulund said lock the pippier to the ground next to the target zoom in the mfd, and it should lock as soon as its in range then launch, also make sure your missile effective rang in the config menu is at 50%.

Other way round I think mastiff. The daylight Mav (K) has a lock range of about 3nm, the Infrared Mav (D) is about 6nm?

Boulund has given you a good technique. Lock the ground near a target. Sometimes it will jump onto the actual target by itself, other times you need to bump it nearer with you hat/mouse/whatever and it will stick to the target. This technique cant be used in towns as it'll lock onto buildings, but it works for a vehicle in the open.

A problem that increasingly is hitting folks as PC's become faster and faster is that the speed of movement of the cursor gets faster too, which makes it harder to lock up targets. Really annoying! You find the money to get a faster PC for Lockon and it makes locking targets tougher. Such is life.

Ive tried to lock on to the ground in a early stage. It makes it a bit easier. When two units ride next to eachother (DE and a sam) and a whole group of units (m13) just in front of them, the cursor keep locking the wrong unit. First i surely wanna take out the Sam. It happend to many times ive got so fixed on the MFD, trying to get a lock on the right unit that i came way to close and the consequences were harsh.

I know you can jump from targets with a certain keypress but i dont think a real A-10 pilot can hit "Shift-Delete":D

you can always change it to your button on the joystick like i have it; to cycle targets.

I just bumb the lock towards the other target too.

The Ks are limited to a 2.9nm - 3.0nm lock range. The Ds on the other hand are 7.9nm - 8.0nm lock range, these are maximum stand-off limits.

Ks are only usable in daylight with good conditions, typically I'll use these for 1.5-2.8nm ranges. However I opt not to carry Ks in preference for Ds. The major difference besides range is the Ks do pack a bigger warhead.

The Ds have a second zoom level on them, which is HUGE. If you're not using that, do so! You can use the 3x zoom level to pan n' scan for targets, once located zoom in for a 6x zoom level to more accurately lock targets.

Don't fire Mavs with less than 1.0nm from target. They'll tend to track correctly however overshoot by a few yards, and result in no effect on target.

Besides that, it's common sense and practice. I am the Mav ace of our squadron, I can typically fire my entire maverick payload off in a single pass with less than a second between launches from maximum stand-off ranges. (1 AGM per target, with good effect :p )

Not every scenario allows for that, but I can when needed. Not trying to brag-it-up, just letting you know it's perfectly possible to get positive locks very quickly with practice.

I follow a not real approach but one that's allowed by the game:

The moment i see targets, i select either bombs or MAV's and then go full zoom (to the point where the HUD fills my entire screen). Then instead of moving the pipper over the target by means of a HAT-switch (or keyboard) which is way to jumpy, i "fly" the pipper over the target and then lock it up.

Far from reality but ingame it works nicely.

Personal Wish List: A6 Intruder, Vietnam theater, decent ATC module, better VR performance!
