Grimes Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 I've been skeptical of it since it was announced a while back. I think that someday a service like that might be the norm, maybe 20-30 years from now. But in this day and age I just don't know. You will always have the camp that want to have a physical copy of a product in hand, there are some who like stuff like Steam, Impulse, and Direct2Drive. With Direct2Drive and Impulse you just download the game to your computer just a single time and you no longer need the internet to play. Steam has an offline mode, but for the most part you must be online, on the other hand it is much more than just a place to buy and download games. Almost nobody likes Ubisofts new DRM present in Assassins Creed 2 and Silent Hunter 5 where the user must be online to play and have a constant connection to the server. IMO, Onlive is more of the same, it just gets you your games differently. The right man in the wrong place makes all the difference in the world. Distiler Posted March 11, 2010 Posted March 11, 2010 (edited) So, with that, you don't need to upgrade your PC and play the most modern game at full graphics? and I can buy games and use them in that "cloud" or download and run in my computer? or loan them?. That's cool, the problem I see are latency, if this service doesen't have a server near my house, lag won't be good. And if the trend gets fashion your hardware will be reduced to a mere server terminal. It has a destructive potential on many genres. Great for fast mindless trigger puller kidds, but the rest of us will be left out. Edited March 11, 2010 by Pilotasso 1 .

Grimes Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 It seems like Netflix but with a dynamic product. To me, this service makes sense with single player only games. Play it once through, enjoy it, move on to the next. Multiplayer games are a whole other animal. I've got hundreds of hours in TF2, Lockon, and several other games. If you play a game for more than 3 months then you end up paying more for the game. But then again if you use it to rent other games.. it sorta pays for itself. digital_steve Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Be handy for those wanting to play the latest games without upgrading their systems... seems that it doesn't rely on your own system specs. gumball360 Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 (edited) Is this saying I can run modern games on my P.O.S. computer? For cheaper than I'm currently paying for GameFly? With no waiting for the next game to arrive in the mail? I'm very, very interested in this... EDIT: But it looks like you have to pay to buy or rent games, on top of the monthly fee. What's that about? Most programs like this have either a monthly fee OR pay to play, not both. Edited March 12, 2010 by gumball360
Distiler Posted March 12, 2010 Posted March 12, 2010 Yes it seems you pay to maintain the servers that make run games like Crysis at full graphics and high fps in your pos computer. You just recieve a interactive video, but the game is executed in the "cloud" server. AMD Ryzen 1400 // 16 GB DDR4 2933Mhz // Nvidia 1060 6GB // W10 64bit // Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2
