Bouddha
Hi all, In LO FC2 manual its written that the Flood mode is for using AIM-7 in close range using the missile seeker. Isn't it the AIM-120 which is used in Flood mode ? regards
Exorcet
AIM-7 has Flood (F-15 radar illumination). AIM-120 has Visual (AMRAAM radar illumination). Bouddha
Hello, So if you fire an AIM-120 in that mode, it will be directly an fire & forget, correct ? thanks regards
funkee
Thats right. If the ARH missile is fired at short range (typically visual range), without radar lock, it can use its active seeker just after launch, making the missile "fire and forget". The NATO brevity code "Maddog" is used in this situation. Bouddha
But in that mode if AIM-120 is selected, it will automatically be the missile seeker that will aquiere and give you the lunch authorization, correct ? Its not the F15 radar in that case as opposed to the AIM-
Exorcet
In visual mode, the F-15 radar can be off. If the radar is off, you get no targeting information or launch authorization. It is up to you to ID the target as friend of foe (visually, or checking by turning radar on) and to decide when to fire. The AMRAAM's seeker only activates after the missile is clear of the F-15, so it won't give you any info while acquiring the target. I don't use Flood mode very often so this might be a little incorrect, but while the F-15 radar must be on, you do not need a lock on. The missile goes for the 'brightest' radar target (often the closest). Again, you will not get tracking information or launch authorization because there is no lock on. Bouddha
For me a maddog shoot is when you lunch your 27ET or AIM-120 without any lock. The floode more you have a lock. Then its a question of having a visual on the lock identify Friend/Foe Thus for me, this is not a so called maddog shoot. regards
CVFSGoran_VU
For me a maddog shoot is when you lunch your 27ET or AIM-120 without any lock.
