EtherealN Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 However, even merely moderately competent mission designers place units so that none are hiding behind or inside trees from the approach directions that the pilots are supposed to take. Unless their name is Panzertard. Then they do it on purpose so they can hear your terrified screams on TS. :P [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Daniel "EtherealN" Agorander | Даниэль "эфирныйн" Агорандер Intel i7 2600K @ 4.4GHz, ASUS Sabertooth P67, 8GB Corsair Vengeance @ 1600MHz, ASUS GTX 560Ti DirectCU II 1GB, Samsung 830series 512GB SSD, Corsair AX850w, two BENQ screens and TM HOTAS Warthog DCS: A-10C Warthog FAQ | DCS: P-51D FAQ | Remember to read the Forum Rules | | | Life of a Game Tester

EtherealN Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 It's not so much a question of wanting to run into them - more about enemy MANPAD, triple-A and SAM munitions being able to fly straight through them. :P Though in my own experience it is only with rarity that this is an actual problem. Bucic Posted April 27, 2010 Posted April 27, 2010 If you fly low and slow a patch of trees can obstruct your view on 30% of the battlefield and every single bad guy on these 30% of battlefield will be able to shoot at you. Area defense track file included in DCS default install is a good example. I mean playing it as a mission, not watching it. F-5E simpit cockpit dimensions and flight controls Kill the Bloom - shader glow mod Poor audio Doppler effect in DCS [bug] Trees - huge performance hit especially up close
ED Team JimMack Posted April 27, 2010 ED Team Posted April 27, 2010 Right, but this is Georgia, not Afghanistan. There are trees here, and enemies can hide behind them and shoot you while you are unable to see them. However, even merely moderately competent mission designers place units so that none are hiding behind or inside trees from the approach directions that the pilots are supposed to take. This offsets some of the negative effects of the see-through trees, but it still is a problem. It isn't a game-killer for most people, but I respect those that feel it is for them. Actually, in Helmand province in Afghanistan around the river, there are a lot of trees. Insurgents with HMG and/or RPGs hide there and you can not see them, but they can see you and shoot at you. In Summer, it is even worse. The surrounding crops are over 3m high, and they can see you, but from a helo you can not see them. For troops trying to clear a field, it is a nightmare, with visibilty of 1m. For an understanding of the problem for a helo pilot, and tactics to use, suggest you read Ed Macy's 2 books of his experience as an Apache pilot in Helmand province. Having problems? So as usual it falls to the infantry to seize and hold the ground. Sorry, back on subject I try to rely on the hills and ridges and ignore the trees. So as usual it falls to the infantry to seize and hold the ground. Sorry, back on subject I try to rely on the hills and ridges and ignore the trees. As I posted a while back in another thread, at LLTM I saw an experienced Lynx/Apache pilot fly Black Shark against an A-10A, guns only. Very interesting to see the helo tactics used (hills, ridges, valleys). It took quite a bit of time before the A-10 finally got him, and even then the A-10 had taken quite a few hits. ShadowVonChadwick Posted April 28, 2010 Posted April 28, 2010 (edited) I do understand the AI issues but I'm just happy to have tree cover. Collision detection for trees will be hard to implement unless approached from "area" view point rather then per tree basis. Not imposable but do we have the CPU cycles to deal with it ?? I noticed they seem to have changed collison for HT Tranmission cables from BS values. Liked the "Tree Shader Mod 2.0" for LockOn.
