comanche_001 Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 I'm reading that the best way to install patch 1.02 is to deinstall Black Shark and install a clean and fresh version 1.0. However, are my savegames being kept when deinstalling Black Shark? I don't want to lose my progress in the campaigns.
Butcher59 Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Then save your players.lua and restore it after patch! Or better, make a complete backup of the entire BlackShark Folder and restore step by step what do you need! Panzertard Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 Note, some of the files have many new settings. If you replace files indiscriminatly, you may end up breaking your install. Rather - use Notepad++ - study the content of the old vs the new, and copy over the content you really need to keep. The mind is like a parachute. comanche_001 Posted May 17, 2010 Author Posted May 17, 2010 So, the file player.lua keeps track of your progress?
beers Posted May 17, 2010 Posted May 17, 2010 related-but-not question; If the best way to install 1.0.2 is on a fresh, clean installation of 1.0.0, and if most of us here are already working on 1.0.1, it would stand to reason that just about everyone of us made our backup, uninstalled, re-installed and then applied the 1.0.2 update... so my question is, if the programmers KNEW they WANTED us to be working with a clean/fresh install, why did they waste the time of having the installation program make a backup on the fly? (I only note this because I had to do the whole thing 3 times, 1st time, didn't know about the "upgrade from 1.0.1 is not supported" and found out why, fps went to hell, 2nd time I got a blue-screen-o-death just before the installation completed, learned the lesson "don't install a new app on an oc'd machine on a hot day, wait until it cools down") 2600K @ 4.2GHz, MSI P67A-GD55, 16GB G.Skill @2133 , GTX 970, Rift, SSD boot & DCS drive [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
dburne Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 I installed over 1.0.1, as I thought the original announcement post stated that could be done. Seems to have gone without issue for me, at least so far - my performance has actually increased. After reading all this talk about doing the clean install then patching to 1.0.2, I am debating whether to go ahead and go through that process or not... but then I think the sim is running well for me, so why go through that? Luke.S Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 yeah mine is running better after installing over 1.01 as well.
Arrowhead Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 I deinstalled and reinstalled over a fresh copy just to be safe. Didn't notice any difference, but oh well, it's running well, can't complain. Someone did specifically say that the updater simply wouldn't update certain files if they didn't have the correct time stamps. So while things might appear to run fine after installing over 1.0.1 now, you just never know what headaches might await. dburne Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 Yeah I guess in that case I probably should go ahead and do the uninstall and clean install procedure , maybe this weekend... PhoenixBvo Posted May 18, 2010 Posted May 18, 2010 One tip for people with a lot of changes in their 1.0.1 installation: Make use of a merge tool such as http://winmerge.org/ or better, but not freeware: Beyond Compare. This is what I did: Make a folder Backup at the level of your top blackshark folder; Move the whole installation to the Backup folder; Install the clean 1.0; Apply the 1.0.1 patch to this installation; Move this into something like "Compare"; Now do a folder compare (using the mergetool of your choice) on the clean 1.0.1 in Compare and your own edited version. You'll easily find all the changes which need to be applied to your final version; Now again do a clean 1.0 install; Apply patch 1.0.2; Apply the changes you found using the folder compare per file using Notepad++. Done! And you're sure you got everything without destroying the new settings. Lots of work for "just" applying a patch... I still think it's strange that patch 1.02 isn't backwards compatible

Lots of work for "just" applying a patch... I still think it's strange that patch 1.02 isn't backwards compatible  This isn't "just" a game either :smilewink:. My guess is that the difficulty arises from the decision to make the sim easy-customisable. Because all settings and even some logic is stored in text format and option lists can be written in any order, it becomes very challenging to write an auto-merge tool for all .lua files. That is the price we pay for having so much freedom in fiddling around with every detail of the sim. I personally feel that's a small price... [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] CPU i7 4970k @ 4.7 GHz RAM 16GB G.Skill TridentX 1600 ATX ASUS Z97-PRO DSU Samsung 850 PRO 256GB SSD for Win10, Plextor M6e 128GB SSD for DCS exclusively, RAID-1 HDDs GFX Aorus GTX 1080 Ti 11GB Xtreme Edition, ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q, 27" with G-Sync, Oculus Rift CV1 HID TM HOTAS Warthog + 10 cm extension, MFG Crosswind pedals, TrackIR 5, Obutto oZone My TM Warthog Profile + Chart, F-15C EM Diagram Generator

Replacing player.lua with the old one didn't help either. Missing some other files? Please tell me I don't have to start the campaigns all over again... :pilotfly:
