pretty scaring news but didn't read that myself . i think you misunderstood oil cracks with oil plumes ?? BP is drilling two others wells to reach the original well and pomp the flow . junction is expected to happen in august . will it work , don't know but at a first glance there is no reason that it doesn't .

use of nuclear weapon to contain oil spills works according to Wikipedia , russian tested the method successfully several times but there's always a risk that it creates cracks in the seafloor which then , would turn the disaster into something unstoppable , unstoppable until the oil reservoir pressure reaches the ocean bottom one

detailled documentary about how all happened

speculation atm on this big crack but more reports are surfacing on this story.

@ Diveplane : it may exists but if so i think it has nothing to do with BP

@ Mikoyan : sounds nice but right now it's soccer  . i thought the game already played .. Germany isn't finalist yet , you know the proverb never sell bear skin before having killed him

Navy blimp hovers over Gulf on oil spill duty

The Associated Press

Monday, July 12, 2010 | 12:15 a.m.

A Navy blimp has started looking for oil and distressed wildlife in the Gulf of Mexico.

The Coast Guard commander of the operation, Tony Lombardi, said Sunday that initial flights are over the coast of Alabama, but the missions will be expanded as needed and as the weather allows.

Observers are typically operating from an altitude of 300 to 500 feet in the 178-foot-long airship, which can come to an almost complete stop. Lombardi says the crew will radio directly to boats below when they see oil or wildlife that needs attention.

So far, the blimp has spotted problems with boom that needed repairs. It's operated by a Navy contractor and staffed by the Coast Guard.

Seems to be holding, although they are still pressure testing, but the signs look good as no oil is flowing at all at the moment and they only have 30 feet to go on the drilling of relief wells.

So it really does look like its coming to an end, the leaking part anyway, the clean up operation on the other hand is only just begining and will take 20 + years to complete, if not 30+ years.

But hey, USA has been polluting everyone elses backyard in their search for oil over the years, it had to come back and bite them sooner or later.

I remember Piper Alpha, its only 150 miles away from me and when that happened and killed 167 people and destroyed a rig much much bigger than the transocean one, our government and our citizens didnt go apeshite crazy against the USA like the USA has against BP and Britain, Occidental was US owned yet we didnt let loose with all the crazyness that we have seen so far on TV in regards to Blaming the accident on Britain.

Typical if you ask me, I just wonder if it was an American company that had caused the accident if tempers would of still run so high ???

But, after alls said and done, I hope the leak has come to an end now.

EDIT:

If people are gettin sick due to them helping cleanup the spill, then its their own fault for not wearing masks and protective clothing, everybody must know that breathing in fuel fumes is harmful in large quantities, but saying that, I doubt very much people will get sick to any degree that it lasts for the rest of their life, but in the short term it will make people dizzy, sick, etc etc, but lasting health problems I very much doubt. Unless of course the detergent that they spray to disperse the oil on the surface of the water contains bad ass chemicals, but even then I doubt that because the chemicals supposedly cannot be harmful to a large degree to stuff living in the seas.

But knowing America, I expect to see a flood of claims against BP in regards to health problems, which probably have nothing to do with the spill, similar to the 61'000 claims for money that BP think are suspect claims, they have already paid out 32'000 claims with another 17'000 in the process of being paid out, but 61'000 are suspect claims in BP's eyes, so I fully expect the same with bogus health claims, not saying everyone will be bogus, but I suspect a whack of them will be and will eventually be denied.

BP may be brutish but the oil rig belongs to US subcontractors, the very same that had a large oil spill in 1979 also in Gulf of Mexico and owned Exxon Valdez.

Isn't the subcontractor swiss, actually?

the new system seems to work for now . concerning the end of human race seems quite unreal to me , the first helium is a site where anyboby can write and give its own point of view , the second article (dvice.com) seems more a religious interpretation , i mean all that things created by a bad drilling well ??

during last decades we had our fate of end of life on earth documentaries from comets to ice thaws passing by mega tsunami in california or in Japan . but i've never seen not even once something speaking of the methane thing , and i believe if there was a chance , even very small that such scenario could happen , we would have heard about it . i think it's not very serious . the dude in the article say that human race has 6 monthes left before extinction i don't see why i'm speaking about that in fact

yes it is.

Only mentioned subcontractors to dispel the UK blaim Syndrome stuff that is actually going on. Should it be another oil company but same country, wouldnt make a difference.

Im angry because people were incompetent by letting the spill happening and then letting them use toxic compounds to clean the oil at the surface.

The fact US has gone for war for less than this, people have died and are going to die, or loose their life stiles and all this has gone largely unchecked, makes me wonder where are the minimum humane standards.
