Your best sensor is the Mk1 eyeball, followed by IR maverick, though it has a narrow field of view.

Before you can use either, you need to know where the heli is operating to start a search.

Hello :)

Normally I'll wait for my wingman to mention bandits in the area. Generally, those will be Hinds in the campaign flying at a low (though not nap-of-earth) altitude. Generally in the area of 1000 feet or so I think if the helicopter is being instructed to attack ground targets.

To engage them, do so from above. You ALWAYS want to come in from an altitude or angle that prevents them from pointing their gun at you. A very very brief burst is all it takes normally, and then you'll be rewarded with seeing the target chopper break up and sprial, then go to the ground in flames

In addition, if you choose to attack with Sidewinders you'll want to use them from a close range. I personally fire from above at less than 1 mile (maybe 1/2 a mile) to hopefully prevent them from popping flares to distract the weapon. Though of course in those instances, it may be more prudent to just fire with the gun and tear the chopper apart.

EDIT: Also, the enemy helicopters -WILL- fire ATGM's at you if they are in a situation where they've nothing else available. I've never been hit by an AT-6 Spiral, and it seems the AI just uses them to ward your aircraft away since there isnt really a huge chance of them getting a hit (and almost zero chance I imagine against a maneuvering fixed-wing aircraft. Try and keep that potential threat in mind though.

No, I just look around for them. I don't wait for them to start shooting missiles or anything like that - in fact, I stay at least 2000' AGL to prevent them from doing so.

Choppers are supposed to be hard to see from above, and you probably don't want to be flying low enough that you can look up and see them.

The Ka-50 seems to be unrealistically capable vs the A-10. I've been hit by its cannon while flying pretty much perpendicular to it at 200+ knots. Tacview showed it firing a spread of around 8+ shots across my path, and it's been a while since I've played Black Shark but I'm pretty sure its cannon can't fire that fast...

Key for engaging choppers though is: a) find them. That's actually pretty tricky. You might want to play with labels on so you can get their location, then look away, turn labels off, and look back. Once you're good at re-acquiring them when you already know their location, you can start hopefully spotting them with only a general idea of their location. Then b) spend as little time as possible flying straight towards or away from them. Their weapons will have a very hard time dealing with lateral motion, but they will destroy you if you fly straight at them. Unfortunately, to use your own weapons you have to fly straight at them, so... :)

Also, if you have spare Mavericks, they can be used to take out helicopters, and it's pretty hilarious to do so.

Last time AI Ka-50 got me did a 80 degrees pitch-up maneuver and shoot me while he was falling backwards, perfectly compensating for my movement by rudder :D James Bond style

Thats the general rule, bu don't do this if you are playing the A-10 Campaign. You will be eaten alive by the nearby Buk.

Ka-50 has killed F-15. Confirmed. So who would care about Hoggy? :D

Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D
