Lio Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Is there a way for me to get wingmen to datalink me targets even though they are not on recon missions? Often i hear stuff like "enemy air defense 11' clock" but i look and look and cant find em. It would be nice if you could order your wingmen to datalink you targets my default when he spots em. Usualy my wingman is much much much better at spotting anything then i am. I do know how Recon missions and datalink work so thats not my problem. Thanks for any help :)
Frederf Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Nope, recon mode is the only way to get them to send DL objects. Thing is that I've often got the AI wingman stuck in recon mode, even after he returns to formation. He's still in "see and send" mode like that part of his AI didn't return to normal when his recon run ended. Just run 1km recon runs from a safe distance when your wingy spots an air defense and you don't see it. He'll be able to DL it since he already knows about it. Plus stopping and having a look around like this slows you down and the slower the flight goes, the longer one lives.
Lio Posted August 2, 2010 Author Posted August 2, 2010 Hey Frederf. So far ive been using the 1km recon and it works ok. But often if i do it with some forward speed the wingman calls out targets with bering like he usualy do in recon mode unlike the 11. clock thingy. But he dont DL the targets to me. It only seem to work when im in a hover. Ive never tried having him stuck in recon mode. I feel that no matter how slow i go i never spot all the AA or targets. Just finaly finished the Convoy Hunt mission where i didnt get shot down. Even my wingman survived though he had to RTB early with smoke from his engines after some AAA hits. Looking at the ACMI i found out i had been doing a hover in 300m inside the stinger umbrella provided by one of the convoys Avenger escorts. No clue why they didnt light me up, but never got a LWS warning.
Insanatrix Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Avengers don't lase you AFAIK. Basicly just a stinger on a humvee. You have to spot and eliminate and hope they don't fire. Their max range is also determined by their skill level which may have been set to random. If he doesn't datalink you a target but calls out it's clock heading it could either be too far away or too far off to one side for him to lock it in his shkval.

Frederf Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 I think that's just for making sure they're in stinger range and/or to use the .50 cal? In real life I'm sure they'd forgo the range estimation for a sure target with known LWR capabilities.
159th_Viper Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 Been a while since I strapped the Egg-Beater to my back, but have been lased every time I was tagged by an Avenger. Usually warning followed by immediate death so any warning is purely academic, but a warning nonetheless :D Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Insanatrix Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 I always take them out before I even step foot in the target area so I haven't been hit by one. Mostly it's those pesky Tor's =P
Frederf Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 The fact that even with random spawns, the ABRIS pinpoints the active (and only the active) static defenses that aren't 100% hidden is just hideously easy.
Booger Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Hey Frederf. So far ive been using the 1km recon and it works ok. But often if i do it with some forward speed the wingman calls out targets with bering like he usualy do in recon mode unlike the 11. clock thingy. But he dont DL the targets to me. It only seem to work when im in a hover. Yeah, I would send mine out usually at 3km, but he would usually get smoked. I started doing more "snooping"--starting at 1km, then going further based off of what he found. It takes a bit longer obviously, but it greatly extends survivability. As far as sending datalink data, mine seems to send all except the last one found. If I call for another recce, THEN the last data is sent. Then again, I still use 1.0.1 (and plan to be until 1.0.3), so I don't know if that's fixed in 1.0.2 or not.

Do the ABRIS pin point targets? I dont understand this. You mean they are pre coded into it before a flight?
Frederf Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Aye, they are. Any unit (unit group?) that is visible in the pre-flight planner before the mission is auto loaded into the ABRIS for flight. The units usually look like "O Unit 83" or something. My beef is that you might have 10 probable SA-9 groups visible in the planner that may or may not be there when the mission starts (probability presence) and when the mission starts the ABRIS only displays exactly which units "made the cut" and spawned in due to probability.
