darrenl Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 Hey All, I'm fiddling around with the mission editor and trying to create myself a training mission. What I'd like to do is practice attacking a defensive site consisting of SAMs and AAA threats...and maybe with a couple of soft targets that are being protected by these assets. I'm a bit ignorant of what a good defensive site looks like...can any of you offer some suggestions of some good units to place for training purposes? Cheers. Dash Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 I can only speak to SHORAD threats, but as a Hog driver, that's your main concern anyway. A Tunguska battery typically consists of four 2S6Ms, a Ranzhir CP, and several reload vehicles. A Tor battery has a similar makeup, but being far less numerous than the Tunguska, a single 9K330 may be substituted for a 2S6M in a Tunguska battery, with the Tor taking the higher priority threats and handing off targets to the Tunguskas. Single Tors have been similarly employed in Osa batteries. A Buk battery consists of six TELARs arranged in a ring, a CP, a target aquisition radar, and a few reload vehicles. Owing to its smaller numbers in Russian service compared to its predecessor, the Kub, mixed Kub/Buk batteries are not unusual. Hope that helps! I'm working from memory, so I can't provide details on unit separation distances, but that should be enough to get you started. 2

darrenl Posted October 22, 2010 Author Posted October 22, 2010 Awesome info guys. I'll get to work right away on fixing up what I have...cause I wasn't even close ;) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Commonsense Gamer: Blogging on MMOs and other stuff too
Headspace Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 That's very good info. I was thinking about doing my next video on how to deal with a medium range radar SAM threat (since the last three are non-combat, etc). Knowing how to make a realistic layout for that is useful.
darrenl Posted October 23, 2010 Author Posted October 23, 2010 So I made something like this one: SA-15 Gauntlet "TOR" battery structure: 4 missile launcher 9A331 1 command center 9S737MK* 2 missile transport truck (Ural-43203) 9T244** 1 transport truck (Ural-43203) 9T245 1 technical service truck (Ural-43203) 9W887 1 service part truck (Ural-43203) 9F339 1 camouflage system part truck (Ural-43203) 9F116 I couldn't find some of those vehicles, but I made due. I didn't do so well against to SA-15 (9A331). I'm thinking I was waaaay to high when I attacked them. I've attached a track. Any hints on how to hit those missile launchers?ooops.trk [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Commonsense Gamer: Blogging on MMOs and other stuff too

Boberro Posted October 24, 2010 Posted October 24, 2010 I advice to use NATO | USSR units templates from here: http://files.lockon.ru/en/158/ There are plenty of units SAM templates, example Strela defence consist of few Strelas, few Shilkas placed close to each other. Reminder: Fighter pilots make movies. Bomber pilots make... HISTORY! :D | Also to be remembered: FRENCH TANKS HAVE ONE GEAR FORWARD AND FIVE BACKWARD :D ಠ_ಠ ツ

Just stay high enough to get out of it's range and use the LITENING to take out the launchers. But if you don't have enough PGM's you can try a very low approach, use terrain masking and low altitude, and pop up quickly for a Mav attack. But that all depends on how good you are with the Maverick (Without ground stab that is...). Once the launchers are out of the way clean the rest up. I haven't tried attacking any of AAA / SAMs though so this is just going on basic tactics. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] EtherealN: I will promptly perform a sex change and offer my hand in marriage to whomever
darrenl Posted October 24, 2010 Author Posted October 24, 2010 I'm certainly attempting to take those SA-15s out. I do get the drop on them but as soon as I launch a Mav at them, they shoot in down, and then promptly attempt to get me as well ;) I'm approaching the site at about 12000 feet, using the LITENING to set everything up. All goes well until I launch. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Commonsense Gamer: Blogging on MMOs and other stuff too
evilnate Posted October 24, 2010 Posted October 24, 2010 Long range sam sites are EASY! Fly nap of the earth to the site, they cant shoot you. When you get close enough you can start wasting them with the GAU, just dont stray too far or get too high. If the site has short range sams or AAA your screwed.
darrenl Posted October 24, 2010 Author Posted October 24, 2010 Wow...I can't just break this site I created. I've tried coming in high, coming in really low (NOE) and I still manage to get nailed. Hmmm...can an A-10 take on a battery of four 9A331's as described above? I'm wondering if I'm being realistic with this scenario? I'm wondering if a couple of F-16 on an SEAD mission would take out those for me if this were a "real mission". [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Commonsense Gamer: Blogging on MMOs and other stuff too
gekoiq Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 Yeah I don't think a lone A10 is capable of taking out a TOR battery, the TORs are NASTY against anything that flies within it's envelope (including Mav's, cruise missiles, HARMs, etc). You would need at least a 3 or 4 ship flight of A10s concentrating fire on the launchers OR a flight of F16's/F18's doing SEAD.
ShalashakaDS Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 (edited) I dont know but, ive downloaded your track and played your mission, all i needed to destroy them was to stay above 20000ft and they didnt even try to paint me with their radars. I thought maybe you had put them with a low skill level so i created myself the same situation you had and gave all units excellent as skill level. Same thing, above 20000ft they didnt shoot me even if flew right over them, but as soon as i got down to 19000 they would imediatelly lock and start shooting. Dont know if its a bug or what (also dont think its exactly realistic but what do i know?) but it seemed strange. Can someone here confirm these behavior? Edited October 25, 2010 by ShalashakaDS
darrenl Posted October 25, 2010 Author Posted October 25, 2010 That is a bit odd. I thought the max altitude for the SA-15 was 10000ft? Boy...I was kind of off if it's 20. What is also weird is that they even engaged me at 100ft. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Commonsense Gamer: Blogging on MMOs and other stuff too
ShalashakaDS Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 What i found odd was that above 20000ft they didnt even try to paint me. The little research ive done generally states their max engagement altitude at 6000m wich is consistent with what we see in the sim, after all they are suposed to be only low to medium altitude sam system. Guess well have to stick with other systems or use a mix of medium range systems and fighters to create a realistic scenario.
Kuky Posted October 25, 2010 Posted October 25, 2010 Against TOR's should be easy... if there are no medium or long range SAM's all you need to do is fly above 20,000ft + and use TGP and GBU's. Don't overfly the target... instead as soon as you drop the GBU continue gently climbing and turn to right or left side (if you use laser guidance turn to same side the TGP is on your wings) PC specs: Windows 11 Home | Asus TUF Gaming B850-Plus WiFi | AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D + LC 360 AIO | MSI RTX 5090 LC 360 AIO | 55" Samsung Odyssey Gen 2 | 64GB PC5-48000 DDR5 | 1TB M2 SSD for OS | 2TB M2 SSD for DCS | NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 1000W | TM Cougar Throttle, Floor Mounted MongoosT-50 Grip on TM Cougar board, MFG Crosswind, Track IR
