I would read into that, that they need to make X amount of return from the A10C release before they move it over to the Steam platform, due to the associated costs of releasing it via Steam.

That's my take on it, and fair call too.

I must agree. I was a late person coming to the Lock On party. When I wanted it I first went to steam... Then google... "Lock on digital download"... Then I found a sale where I picked it up for 3$. But with prescence on Steam they would have sold it for more than 3$ I assure you, haha. Or rather the store would have kept its copy and I would have bought one on a digital service :)

I like steam... No mails with serial numbers or one download only :(

I bought flaming cliffs directly from this site... but in the end. For me as a consumer it would be easier...

That said I understand the Steam tax. But I wonder... Everybody with steam must have seen or been annoyed with Railworks. They used Steam against steam... They used DLC to basically blanket Steam, haha. I guess in the end the PR was worth it.

Thare is no associated cost by selling game via Steam. Valve (owner od Steam) just get 30% cut from final price (remaining 70% goes to developer/publisher) - there are no other fees etc.

That is much better deal than retail where developer normally gets only about 20-30% of final price compared to 70% when sold over Steam, D2D or Impulse.

If a 30% cut isn't a cost, then what is it?

And 30% is more than if you distribute yourself.

Cost would be expenses by DCS in order to sell over Steam. Cut from sold licences isnt expense (DCS isnt spending money).

DCS get over 90% of final price when they sell it directly, but because such copies use StarForce, DCS have to pay fee from such sales.

DCS get 70% of final price when selling over Steam, which is lower %, but in that case they can use CEG (Steam DRM which is available for free to developers) and game available there can attract many more users (lets be honest, pretty much only hardcore Simulator fans knows that DCS even exist). IMO its better to get 70% from 100K sales than 95% from 10K sales :)

Lets not forget that Steam has over 30 000 000 active users.... and quite a few gamers buy only from Steam (like me) and/or will wait for Steam version anyway in order to avoid StarForce (which still have stupid activation limits).

Firstly, it's ED who is the developer. DCS is the name of the franchise. The above is like saying "Cost would be expenses by Call of Duty in order to sell over Steam."

(Steam DRM which is available for free to developers)
And of course removing the Starforce integration and adding the Steam DRM isn't going to cost them anything, because developers are magical elves that come out from the enchanted forest of Programmia at night and implement defect-free code for free while you sleep...

This is a good reason to eventually release on Steam, but I'm sure there's also plenty of people who do use Steam but will buy from other sources if what they want isn't on Steam. And selling directly to those people give ED a bigger cut from the revenue, so it makes sense to delay the Steam release unless the primary sales period is over.

Plus, a lot of the costs of Starforce have already been paid, so switching to Steam's DRM isn't going to save them much, if anything.

I'm also note sure just how many more sales Steam will net. I guess it increases the visibility of the game, especially if it's promoted by Valve (listed in the news popup and shown on the front page), but I don't know if they'd put games like this up there. Did Black Shark get much fanfare when it was released on Steam?

I refuse to install any game that use StarForce - because of that crap several of my games dont work in Win7 64bit :mad::mad: - so EDs decision to use StarForce means that I wont ever buy it directly from them.

Also if release over Steam is significantly delayed (compared to other distibution options), I just wont pay full 60€ price for it. When developer or publisher insist that I have to wait for no reason, I will just play something else and wait for that game to get at least 50% off - I have 200+ other games and it will take me some time just to finish those in my backlog......

Purely as an attempt to alleviate possible ignorance and not to perpetuate yet another debate, but you are aware that Starforce installs no optical drivers whatsoever on the end-user's system, don't you? As a consequence any fears you might harbour about games not working with the current version of SF is unfounded/misguided insofar as it relates to ED software.

I know that version that you currently use doesnt install drivers. But I am angry at StarForce that they didnt fixed their compatibility issues in older version and because of that I cannot play several of my games - I cannot trust Starforce that same thing wont happen again with A-10. Because of this I wont buy anything that contain StarFoce.

Sorry, but this makes no sense at all. You know full well what they use doesnt do what you say, but still fear it does...

I know there will be very little chance of issues with starforce but.. I will wait for it to come out on steam, where i can uninstall and reinstall without question or worry of not being able to reinstall later. If there is no fee other than a cut of the money , why not go to steam the gain of that many potential buyers considering that most if not close to all who use steam would not even know about this sim. I really want this sim but i wont buy unless it comes out on steam, sorry but i do not agree with starforce and what it technically says to legal buyers of the game.

I just like how steam works. Starforce could be set to allow a reinstall a day later or week or month etc later. What if i have an issue with a hard drive , ram or virus? Then i have to reinstall all my games which platform is most likely to give me trouble? From what ive read the new starforce just limits how long between re-installs i have to wait for the next(i could be wrong so correct me if i am). There could be very little issue with that but with steam there is no issue other than logging into my account. I hate what pirates have turned the pc gaming market into.
