GunnDawg Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 I have read the manual on radios and its still just not making much sense, so I figure I will ask here. I am doing one of the missions that this sim comes with and when I hit F10 to find out what the airports frequency is, it says this: Call UG29, 140.000 Mhz So I notice on the UHF radio the first dial for the frequency only switches from A, 2, 3 so how am I supposed to dial in a 1 for 140.000? And the VHF radio's format is xx.xxx so 140 isnt even possible. Could someone shine some light on my issue so I can get a hold of ground control pls?
Stretch Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 There are two VHF radios in the jet. The VHF AM radio has format xxx.xx. You were looking at the VHF FM radio. GunnDawg Posted November 2, 2010 Author Posted November 2, 2010 Where is the other VHF radio then? the one above the UHF radio is the same format as the first one. I'll post a screenshot. EDIT: For some reason i cant get a screenshot.

Stretch Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Sticklers will remind me that the VHF AM radio is capable of frequency subdivision in 25-KHz increments ... just to head them off ... GunnDawg Posted November 2, 2010 Author Posted November 2, 2010 oh alright, I see now. So I tuned the VHF radio to 140.000 and hit "\" but the radio menu does not come up. grrr.
GunnDawg Posted November 2, 2010 Author Posted November 2, 2010 Could someone please help. Maybe a guide or video tutorial or something explaining how to get a hold of tower ?
GGTharos Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Use the mic switch, not \. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
GunnDawg Posted November 2, 2010 Author Posted November 2, 2010 Where is the mic switch? I see a switch in the cockpit that says mic but its not clickable.
JHepburn Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Where is the mic switch? I see a switch in the cockpit that says mic but its not clickable. You have to program it via the HOTAS commands.
GunnDawg Posted November 2, 2010 Author Posted November 2, 2010 So to open the radio commands box would I use MIC UP, DOWN, LEFT, or RIGHT
nomdeplume Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 So to open the radio commands box would I use MIC UP, DOWN, LEFT, or RIGHT Yes, indeed you would. ... Read the relevant parts of the manual. Each direction (except one, which has no function) is used to activate a different radio. It tells you which radio you're using at the top of the radio menu that appears when you use the HOTAS MIC switch. Obviously, you'll only get a response to your message if you've transmitted it using the correct radio, i.e. the radio that is tuned to the frequency your recipient is on. Or, just enable the simple radio option in the options screen and it'll be how it used to be. 1
GunnDawg Posted November 2, 2010 Author Posted November 2, 2010 Yeah I enabled the simple radio option but still cannot for the life of me after like 12 hours of trying to contact tower, figure out how. Could you load up the "Defend Camp Yankee" mission and get a hold of tower for me then give me a step by step on how you did it ? I have tuned 140.000 and everything. 1
nomdeplume Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 If you're using simple radio then the \ key should work as it used to. Of course, the 'realistic' radio wasn't enabled in the previous open beta, so maybe in this one the simple radio isn't? :D I'm at work so I can't try anything for a good couple of hours, sorry. I did do a quick test flight this morning before leaving out of Kobuleti, and didn't have any problems using the realistic radio to contact the tower. It's possible that whatever base you're operating from in that mission doesn't have a working ATC.
GunnDawg Posted November 2, 2010 Author Posted November 2, 2010 Well I managed to get a hold of ATC but for some damn reason on VHF FM 30.000 no options show up for JTAC when I try to contact them.
sweinhart3 Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 I got my radios tuned in the campaign and used the mic keys which brought up the communications menu but could not get any of the selections to activate. I didnt have problems using the same process in quick mission to contact my wingman. Intel i7 990X, 6GB DDR3, Nvidia GTX 470 x2 SLI, Win 7 x64 http://picasaweb.google.com/sweinhart
WarriorX Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Here is a post I made on the SimHQ forums that seemed to help others understand the Radio's. The post was written to help someone understand how to contact JTAC, so that is used as an example in the post. Note that this was written prior to the Beta 2 patch, so things may have changed. First lets get a understanding of which radio we are talking about. There are 3 radio's, VHF AM on top, UHF AM in the middle, and VHF FM on the bottom. All 3 have a set frequency range that they can transmit and receive on. VHF-AM 116.000 MHz - 151.975 MHz UHF-AM 225.000 MHz - 399.975 MHz VHF-FM 30.000 MHz - 76.000MHz *Thanks to AlphaOneSix for this frequency data! So to use your question above, to tune to 131.00 AM to communicate with JTAC you need to do 2 things in order for success, tune the proper radio and set the HOTAS Mic Switch correctly. To tune the top VHF AM radio to 131.00 the first thing that is confusing is that you see a single digit in the left most window and you dont realize that it goes from 1 to 15. Move the left most dial to 13, then the dial to the right of that to 1 and the other windows after the decimal point should read 0. Now that the frequency dials are set, then we need to make sure the radio is set for TR (transmit/recieve) this dial should be already set if you start in the air, and should be set as part of your ramp start. And then this is where the HOTAS Mic Switch comes in. If my memory serves me right, HOTAS Mic Switch forward is for VHF AM, down is for UHF AM, and Aft is for VHF FM. Since we want VHF AM, hit the HOTAS Mic Switch forward, this should bring up the radio interface graphic on your screen. Hope this helps. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] "Is that you John Wayne?.......Is this me?" RogueRunner Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 I made a mission taking off from Anapa and I talk to the tower on 121Mhz. I can get startup and taxi clearance fine but always get "unable to give take off' or something like that when I request T/O clearance. Any ideas? With the price of ammunition these days do not expect a warning shot.
Evilducky Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 Do you taxi straight onto the runway or stop just before it then request take off before you actually enter the runway?
RogueRunner Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 I requested T/O clearance before entering the runway. I did it again after entering thinking I was supposed to be on the runway when doing so (completely unrealistic though but I tried anyway) and the unable problem continued. With the price of ammunition these days do not expect a warning shot.
Evilducky Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 I got denied once since the patch and it was (I believe) because I was to far away from the runway itself. I moved up a bit and it gave me clearance for take off. I believe your supposed to wait for clearance for takeoff before entering the runway. I could be wrong though.
RogueRunner Posted November 2, 2010 Posted November 2, 2010 I believe your supposed to wait for clearance for takeoff before entering the runway. I could be wrong though. That's how it's done in real life yes :D Maybe I was too far away when I did so initially, will try again tonight. Thanx for the help. With the price of ammunition these days do not expect a warning shot.
