Any guesses? Could it be a bird strike? Bimbac Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 IMO, a bird strike would hardly tear a half of the engine apart. If they already were in the assigned flight level, it looks quite unlikely either. My guess is either compressor stall, engine surge, or blade/shaft imbalance (material decay, structural fault, FOD). Let's wait what the investigators come up with :)
berkoutskaia Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 This is probably what is called a UERF (Uncontained Engine Rotor Failure); basically, it's a part of a turbine stage (most likely a single blade) that broke and went through the engine casing, the nacelle, and the wing... Whether this is caused by FOD, surge or anything else will need investigation as Bimbac said. In Mud I Trust.

Bimbac Posted November 4, 2010 Posted November 4, 2010 It's a standard procedure until the investigation is over.
HemingwayFE Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 I'm guessing a turbine fan busted up. No compressor stall is going to do that.
