There are 3rd party tools but if your CPU is close or at 100% then that is your bottleneck.

In it's none optimised state though dcs:a-10 isn't a reliable benchmark. Use blackshark with latest patch which uses two cores.

my overclocked i930 @ 4.1ghz never goes above 60% 2 x core usage and i see average 30fps on my GTX285

that is GPU bottleneck right there.

If you have 100% CPU then you have a CPU bottleneck, otherwise GPU. its as simple as that.

(assuming its not a disk I/O bottleneck ;), but i have SSD + RAID 1 so its not disk)

Core i930 is a quad core chip. Since DCS only uses 2 cores, 60% cpu usage is the max your going to see. That is very definitely cpu bottleneck.

How do you work that out? DCS uses two cores. One for the main app and one for the sound engine. My other cores are therefore bumbling along doing windows stuff.

(I am not talking about an aggregate score of all 4 cores here but the 4 separate cores. Under full game load i see, core 1 40-60%, core 2 1-5%, core 3 30-40%, core 4 0-2%)

The tasked cores are quite capable of hitting 100% at any time if the app (DCS) tasks them that much.

It doesn’t, therefore the limiting factor in my performance scenario isn’t my CPU.

IF my CPU was screaming at 100% then that would be working full tilt and would therefore be the bottleneck.

DCS doesn’t tax a CPU 100% on purpose like Orthos or3DMark or other benchmarking apps.

Confused...so are we CPU or GPU limited in WH!!

That is a nonsensical statement. It all depends on your setup. Run task manager, performance tab so you can see all your cores. Run DCS with it open, (windowed if you have to), and see the average and peak CPU%. If it is flat lined at 100%, then you need a faster CPU, assuming you already have dual/quad cores, if its consistently less than 80% then you may need a faster GFX card. You can run perfmon disk I/O as well to see if your disks can’t keep up.

As I have a 2 generations (now) old gfx card, (GTX285), my diagnosis is that it is my bottleneck.

Shadowze, stay on focus LUKE!!!

Wait for ATI to realease. If they do realease well NVIDIAwill have to come with something else OR thrown the price down.

580's sold out everywhere. Still, it makes sense to wait on the red team as £400 is a lot to gamble on a two week wait IMO.

Need to sell my 285 in the xmas ebay rush though to offeset the cost, (starts fondling credit card)

Next week two cards from the radeon 6900 where supposed to launch as all of you know. Lots of rumors already appeared on delays. We finally have a thing or two confirmed from AMD.

Unfortunately things got delayed a couple of weeks and Radeon series 6900 (Single GPU) will now launch in the week of December 13th. And that is confirmed info straight from AMD.

So probably closer to a month than two weeks

Please do some benchies before you remove your current card (3dmark vantage / 3dmark etc)

I would like to be able to compare your new card against the olde one

Thanks in advance :)

A double GTX 460 FTW beat it. Unfortunatly thats the closest to sim we have.

By the performance compared to other cards, it ain t worth yet the upgrade from a 460 SLI 1Gb for example.

Wait for premium versions...

I haven't got "double GTX 460" and I certainly don't play Hawx2 lol

460's in sli sometimes beats the 580, in certain benchmarks. Only the 470 and above beats the 580 across all benchmarks.

As I said at the start of the thread if you have a 460 or 470 then yes, go sli. If not then get the 580.

In this case OK, but even then i would say, if you can hold it:

After AMD release, even if its 13 december.

And if you can some more:

Wait for premuim 580 that wil have better performance and features, and at this time it will probably be a hell of a card.

Meh, mine came today. Will benchmark tonight;

Reasons I didnt wait;

  • Price won’t come down much. Prices of 480’s etc. haven’t budged much.
  • All reviews were overwhelmingly positive.
  • I don’t want to pay for a “premium” model. That would be even more expensive and you gain little except maybe a vapor cooler which the 580 already has. $/£ to % performace gains are not worth paying extra. Just overclock yourself.
  • I want to get the best xmas price for my outgoing 285 to offset the cost
  • My 285 was struggling NOW with A-10
  • AMD worried when they read the 580 reviews and are holding 6900 back for 'tweaks', etc (only a runour ;))
  • Im not a NVIDIA fanboy having owned all makes of cards from 3dFX onwards but i can say from the bottom of my heart that the ATI catalyst control centre is the pure spawn of satans maggoty-bellend

Now I will be proven wrong if;

RADEON 6970 is faster than 580 on release

And

RADEON 6970 is cheaper than 580 on release

You can wait all day long. In fact you can wait for ever…. Don’t play DCS beta, wait for the final release. Don’t by a HOTAS Warthog, wait till everyone else does…….don't go outside it might rain.

LOL all reviews says it aint the ice of the cake and people run in without even waiting for premium" versions.

All reviews give an increase of 10/15% avor the 480 or whatever.

Not all review include SLI, which for the consumer rend them half useless.

And 10%/15% frames over 17 to 30 is a range of 1 to 4 frame WHOOPP!! beyong 60 your eyes don t catch anyway.

I m talking about those switching from an already top or near top the line, solely for raw power purpose.

Sorry, i see your point mate, my card was 2 generations back. I usually skip one. Although i may change my policy because my GTX285 is only worth £120 on Ebay, whereas if i was selling a 480 / 5870.....

Just had my first test.

with GTX 285 - average FPS 30

with GTX 580 - average FPS 60

Super silky. At 1920x1200. Like butter. Havent done any tweaking yet.

Time for HDR test

Did you do a driver clearout and have you installed the new "580" drivers from NVIDIA? (Just the latest 262.99).

Also, in NVIDIA control panel, record the settings you used for your 285 and set them all back to default and save. New card, new tweaks.

I see about a 100% improvement in A-10, now at 60 fps (without HDR).

Just looking at your stats on your sig. What speed is your CPU running at? You may well be CPU bottlenecked on a stock 920. My 920 ran at 4GHZ no bother with a decent cooler. Just a thought.

My 930 @ 4.1ghz runs at 70-80% in DCS, i haven't taken the speed down to see where DCS hits it for 100% but i would imagine its about the 3.6ghz mark.

Yes & yes

Ticked the clean install during installation so profiles were all at default for tests. The card is working properly as can be seen by the 130% increase in the min fps on BFBC2. Others are 30% or more including A10. Just the flight sims which are strange but also the only tests I used tracks on.

CPU @4.1

I can guarantee you wouldn't get 60fps in the mission I run lol. It's designed to bring the card, (any card), to it's knees.

What is your core loading on average? I get about 60%-80% on the two cores that DCS uses, so the gfx card is limiting factor, even a 580!

Still, from what i'm used to it's a whole new world. I had to stop myself getting a Dell U2711 27" monitor as i can get them cheap, but i thought that its resolution (2560x1440), would put me back to GTX285 speeds albeit with a 'god monitor' to drool over.

And an angry girlfriend to appease ;)

Downloaded afterburner to monitor GPU usage and it's maxing out during my A10 test mission which it is what it was designed to do, (the mission not the card). Not got an accurate monitor for the CPU, so just using the task manager. It looked like it got up to about 85% at it's peak.

Like I said happy with the results just found the IL2/LOFC/RoF figures a bit weird.
