Migo Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 (edited) Got a new CPU today. My previous i5 750 ran at 4Ghz. The new 2500k was easy to overclock to 4.8Ghz. After that the BIOS starts to make trouble. The 20% higher clock resulted in 20% performance gain in DCS: A10. 48fps instead of 40fps at Batumi for example. Which again shows the higher the cpu clock, the higher the performance in DCS. Of course that's only true if your graphics card is not the bottleneck. Update 28/12/10: I received my new GTX 570 today, installed the watercooler, overclocked it and started DCS: A10. It seems my HD5850 was the new bottleneck after installing the i5 2500k because my FPS raised by another 65%, that's crazy !!! Game is gone wild now. Last week Batumi: 28fps -> Beta4: 40fps -> i5 2500k: 48fps -> GTX570: 74FPS ! Last week I've not been able to dream about 74fps. I can even set everything to high now also. Visib. Range: High (instead of Medium), Civ. Traffic High (instead of Off). Only costs me 2fps. I feel like I'm in heaven now and I really don't understand how that worked. My explanation is that my graphics card was the new bottleneck after installing the new 4.8Ghz CPU. It's finally always more than fluent gameplay for me. greetz Migo Edited December 29, 2010 by Migo 1

Slammin Posted December 27, 2010 Posted December 27, 2010 That is a nice OC! I almost cannot wait to upgrade next year. You are definitely correct on the CPU cycles/FPS relationship with A10. Folks have a hard time understanding that just because a CPU is not at 100%, they can still be CPU limited. In reality, as you've also observed, CPU processing speed is directly impacted by CPU clock speed. My 580GTX overclocks like mad but it makes no difference with A10 on my system. Migo Posted December 27, 2010 Author Posted December 27, 2010 Yea and OC is easy like never before. Go into the BIOS set multiplicator to 48, Vcore to something around 1.4v and you're good to go. No more BCLK QPI/VTT struggling. Right now I'm searching a way to get past 4.8Ghz but not much success yet. greetz Migo

Greetz Migo yeah it makes sense, if you dealt with your CPU bottleneck, and then your GPU bottleneck I would be curious to see if there is now an memory bottleneck left. If there isnt, then I wont need to buy super fast memory ;) Good night :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] My Sim/Game CV: Falcon 1,3,4. Gunship. A10 TankKiller. Fighter Bomber. Strike eagle 2&3. Migo Posted December 29, 2010 Author Posted December 29, 2010 My cpu and gpu are watercooled. I think one would be able to achieve 4.5-4.6 Ghz on an air cooled 2500k.
Succellus Posted December 29, 2010 Posted December 29, 2010 It depend on ambient temp, normal watercool can only go as cold as ambient is (ex: corsair H50/70), chilled or refrigerated water cooling system can go a bit below depending on how high the ambient temp is. Which kind is yours ? I suppose thats was the question Power5 issued. Also if you don t want to burn the candle faster than needed, in your place i would step back the overclocks as far as you can, staying with desired results. Yes to some degree, I dont push my overclocking to the max, but saving the life of my hardware has never been an issue sofar, most of us usually buy new stuff after a couple of years anyway. If I am somehow shortening the life of the hardware, it still doesnt shorten its life into within these 2 (max 3) years only which I will be using it. After that it doesnt matter anyway, the computer goes to someone else, and I lower the clock back to stock, and if it hasnt broken yet on OC it wont break on stock for many years :smartass: [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] My Sim/Game CV: Falcon 1,3,4. I'll stick with 4.7Ghz. The first i5 2500k that I tested yesterday needed 1.5v for 4.8Ghz and 1.45 for 4.7Ghz. The new one only needs 1.36v for 4.7Ghz which is more than ok for 24/7. :) greetz Migo Edited December 29, 2010 by Migo

Migo Posted December 29, 2010 Author Posted December 29, 2010 No, the shop abroad where I ordered my cpu accidentally shipped me 2 cpus instead of one. Didn't try to oc my ram yet but that's the next point on my "to-do" list.
