ravenone Posted January 29, 2011 Posted January 29, 2011 (edited) Okay, I have been flying the since "the beginning" but I had never seen the runway lights (actually the flood lights from the threshold to the active) activate after the tower cleared me for take-off before this morning. I guess I have not flown that many night sorties (with proper comm procedures). Anyway... I know forgive the "noobish" post, but I thought that was real kool. Agree with the following qualification: Lights should be on during periods of darkness or restricted visibility conditions. StrongHarm Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Don't tell Mario Batali how to grill a steak! :) It's a good thing that this is Early Access and we've all volunteered to help test and enhance this work in progress... despite the frustrations inherent in the task with even the simplest of software... otherwise people might not understand that this incredibly complex unfinished module is unfinished. /light-hearted sarcasm
BiPod Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Ummm...guys....haven't you heard there is a war on? It's not standard practice to leave lights on if there is a chance of attack. Painting "please bomb here" across the runway in large fluorescent letters is also frowned upon:music_whistling: Yours with unappreciated sarcasm, BiPod. 2

nomdeplume Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 I think the lights the OP is referring to are from the truck with the big floodlight on it that sits at the runway threshold. If you take off at night it illuminates the runway for you. The actual runway lighting should always be on, AFAIK.

I was holding short of the active RWY... and yes the runway lights were on. As the tower cleared me, the flood light activated and spilled brightly down the runway. I had never seen that before but figured I was the "last to know" (a trend) so didn't even think to capture & post any media. Dang now I gotta go find the mission and make sure I'm not just goofy. I'll be back... Rave out [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Windows 10 (64) - AMD Ryzen 9 3900X 12-Core - 32 GB RAM - RTX 2080 Super

Morphine Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 IRL having the runway lights off is SOP at many airports around the world. The controller will either turn them on for you (if present) or you key your mike to turn them on (in some places you can adjust the intensity by the number of times you key your mike). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instrument_landing_system
BiPod Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Agreed. My hometown airport (uncontrolled, MBZ) has lights off as standard with Pilot Activated Lighting available. The nearby regional hub of Albury (pop. 60,000) has Pilot Activated Lighting available outside of tower hours. Military airports will operate according to circumstance. Cheers.
