mooshim Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 Just wanna check with you gents and get things straight before I screw things up again with patching and activation. (Recently, I reformatted having neglected to deactivate--was notified that I had 5 (?) activations left--screwed up that install and then remembered to deactivate--was then notified that I had X number (can't recall) of deactivations left.... etc. etc.) At any rate...to avoid future confusion for tech-challenged schlubs like myself... The last word on this, please, if you wouldn't mind. ____________________________________________ If I were to do a clean install, I would_________. A. have to de-activate, uninstall, install, then re-activate. B. have to do nothing at all, just patch it and stop worrying about it. C. have to de-activate only if planning to completely uninstall and re-install, then patch. D. have to wait and see what Nate or Strongharm does and then do that. ____________________________________________ Cheers, Moosh [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Win7 | Intel Core 2 Quad | Q8400 @ 2.66GHz | 2.67 GHz 3.37GB of RAM 60gig Samsung SSD| GTX 570 "Operation: Bull by the Horns" "Bull Run 2.0"
Phrenesis Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 If i recall correcty when you hit 0 activations you'll get +1 after a few days/weeks. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
EtherealN Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 As long as by "clean install" you mean a "clean install" of the simulator, the procedure is: 1) Uninstall 2) Install :) Basically, your activation for that machine and OS will already be on the activation servers, and when you install again the server should recognize your machine. If the reinstall includes other things, such as migrating to a new drive/new OS/etcetera then it depends on the exact change. Ragtag Posted February 9, 2011 Posted February 9, 2011 (edited) By normal uninstall you shouldn't need to re-activate as the license and hardware key is stored in the register. You will only lose activasions by upgrading hardware (depends on the upgrade) or re-installing OS without backing up the register keys. So you can re-install the game as many times as you want without using activasions as long as you haven't done any of the above. mooshim Posted February 9, 2011 Author Posted February 9, 2011 really helpful. THX... I got a new card (GTX 570) with the recent reformat... I suppose it just identifies my IP address (?)... When I entered my code to activate (upon reformatting) I just assumed that I used up one of my activations (having not de-activated prior to reformatting). I suppose this is not something to worry about then... Many thanks... No, every computer has a hardware key which is based on the components installed. If you change/upgrade surtain components the hardwarekey changes. That's why one has to re-activate sometimes because the DCS license key locks itself to the hardware key. It's the same system Microsoft uses for windows. The hardwarekey is kinda like a computer fingerprint and it is unique :) Edited February 9, 2011 by Ragtag [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] I7 3930K. 16Gb Corsair Vengeance 1866mhz. Asus P9X79 Deluxe.
