I've been searching the forums for answers, and also found them. The problem is, they dont work. In theory I know how to work the radio, and can contact my wingman. That works, but nothing else does. So apparently I'm doing something wrong.

The problem arises in the first mission in the first campaign. Firstly I cant contact the tower to get clearing for start up. They never answer, even though i set the radio to the correct frequency.

So I take off without permission (once I almost crashed into another jet). Then the order is to circle around wp1 and contact jtac on freq 131 vhf am. I guess that this is pretty standard stuff after some playing hours, but I'm still a noob.

The problem is, no matter what i do, jtac never responds, just like with the tower when i ask for startup permission.

I set the radio above the uhf radio to 131, and try both as AM and MAN. No answer.

I set the radio under the uhf to 131 and try both AM and MAN. No answer.

What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated!

EDIT:

I found this tutorial also earlier. My problem is that nothing happens after 1. My pilot reads all the ammo and such, and then nothing.

--------------

The most simplified way I can put it is:

  1. Contact JTAC and check-in.
  2. Wait for the 9-line to finish and after a short pause, they will say "advise when ready for remarks and further talk-on"
  3. Use the radio to say you're ready for remarks
  4. After receiving remarks, use the radio to provide the 9-line readback.
  5. JTAC will confirm readback okay, and say 'standby data'.
  6. You'll then receive a message on both MFCDs saying NEW TASKING; acknowledge this with the ack OSB at the bottom right or TMS LEFT SHORT.
  7. On your TAD, you will have a WILCO and a CNCMP option on the left and right. Use the WILCO option to accept the tasking.
  8. You'll see a red triangle on the TAD. Make the TAD the SOI, use the throttle slew control to put the cursor over the triangle, use TMS UP SHORT to hook the triangle, and then TMS UP LONG to make it the SPI.
  9. Use CHINA HAT FWD LONG to slew everything to the SPI (i.e. location of that triangle). At this point, your targeting pod will pointing at the coordinates the JTAC provided. Use it to locate the precise position of your target(s).

Should be using the VHF AM radio for that frequency. Since there's no overlap of frequencies, you probably are.

Make sure you leave it set to MAN. The AM setting is for the guard channel.

Are you turning the radio on with the dial on the right?

When contacting the tower, are you waiting until your APU is running and the APU generator switch is on before trying to use the radio? Otherwise, it won't have power.

I think the best way to solve this would be if you went through a startup sequence where you don't get a response, then quit, save the track, and attach it to a post here. Then we can replay it and see what it is you're missing.

Also just to confirm, you're using beta 4?

Edit: it might be a good idea to save your track from this mission. If it's a campaign mission or something else that comes with the game, it may include audio files etc. which will make the track fairly large, maybe too large to attach here.

I turn on the radio with the dial on the right, to TK.

I'll have a go with the shooting gallery mission. Maby jtac will respond there.

Will save a track tomorrow.

Using beta 4.

Use FM for JTAC use AM for other flights and ATC. UHF for wing. Then tell us if you cannot connect to Jtac

Hey Maxmax, welcome to the Forums!

There is a link in my signature line to my Radio Tutorial. Give it a look.

Make sure you have access to the Beta Forums.

If you don't yet have access, there is a sticky forum post in the top of this forum.

You can't use FM for JTAC if the freq is supposed to be 131.000

FM only goes to about 90.000 iirc.

So use VHF AM for this freq.

Also check in mission editor what freq JTAC is set to. Sometimes this isnt correctly stated in mission briefing.

Also in the campaign mission 1 (don't recall campaign name) where you have like tons of russian tanks to go against, JTAC is supposedly broken in Beta 4 (in this mission).

Also check your mic hat is correctly set up. When I bound my hat to the 3 different mic states for some reason my mic hat forward was actually VHF FM instead of VHF AM

Ok, I tried the shooting gallery mission. No problem contacting jtac, so it's just a matter of using the correct frequency. apparently it's the wrong one in the mission description in the mission I was playing.

So far so good.

Is the airport tower fm, am or uhf? And how does one find the correct frequency? Been using a pdf i found here in the forums.

Still haven't been able to access the beta forums, will have to look into that. Has something to do with using the same email or something like that.

Press f10 zoom in on map and click on the airport where you are or are planning to go to. There is the frequency for your perusal.

Also for ATC use the VHF AM the top radio that is.

Edit: actually the easiest way to know which radio to use is to look at the frequency.

Top VHF AM is used for 3 digits in the hundreds. for instance 123.000

middle UHF is used for wingmen and flight which are frequencies in the two hundreds. for instance 251.000

Bottom VHF FM is used for below hundred. For instance 32.000

I don't know the exact range of all three radio's but above is a fairly good reference.

edit2: also if your cdu is running. you are for instance in the air and you want to land on an airport: use the right mfcd to open the cdu page. then press 'func' followed by 2 on the keypad just under your hud. This will change the CDU page on the right MFCD to a different page. on the right MFCD CDU page click on DIVERT. Then select the airport you want to go to. This will do a couple of things. First off it will list the correct freq to use to contact ATC and second it will make this airport your current steerpoint. Maybe something else will happen also but don't know :p If the airfield has ILS it will show this freq also.

Ok, now I also managed to contact the tower. Thanks for the help!

Can't find the frequency in the map after pushing f10 though. Still using the pdf. Zoomed in on My airport, Vaziani, but couldn't find any info on frequencies. Looking in the wrong place?

Anyway, pdf works fine, so it still works.

Great forum this btw, help comes fast :)

I had a look at jtac in the mission editor concerning the first mission in the Devil's cross campaign.

There it states that jtac freq is 131. In the mission briefing it says use frequency 131 vhf am.

Is it safe to assume that it's a faulty mission? Or are they referring to 13.1? Or is it me that's stupid?

On the F10 map, you can get the ATC frequency by clicking on the airport.

Devil's Cross has two first missions, but the JTAC in both is definitely set to 131 Mhz. However just looking at the map in the editor, I'd be surprised if they were close enough to spot any targets. I have noticed that sometimes the JTAC just doesn't respond when it doesn't have any targets, rather than telling you to standby or that no tasking is available. WIP, I guess.

Sorry my reply was misleading because of brevity.

I personally use FM for FAC, AM for ATC and other flights, tankers and awacs and UHF for interflight comms.

My point is this is what I do when I make missions and apologies for not reading your first post more carefully:thumbup:

Hey maxmax.

Weird. If i'm ingame and I press f10 and click on the airport (there is a small icon i think on the main runway) I get the relevant information.

Ah you are starting on vaziani. Yes in that mission, with the terrible overclouds and tons of russian tanks on the field, the JTAC to my knowledge is broken.

Just go kill a few tanks without the help of JTAC. I can't play it though because due to the many units and dense cloud cover is hell to my frames.

You should assume 131 means 131.000 :)

edit: and I shouldve read the second page of this thread since most questions are already answered :p

I'm a noob btw but i'm glad to be of help :)

Mission Briefing is referring to 131.00 VHF AM. This is the top radio in the "stack" of three.

Set the left most Frequency Selector Knob to 13

Set the Frequency Selector Knob to the right of 13 to 1

All the other Frequency Selector Knobs to the right of the 1 remain at 0

Assuming your 2 dial switches are set for MAN and TR respectively, then hitting the HOTAS Mic Switch FWD will activate the VHF AM radio to Transmit.
