I was thinking, with the current game terrain system there is a lot of potential for addon terrain and theaters. For example, the desert textures that Mitch created could be used to create a Middle Eastern theater the same size as the LOMAC one. The winter textures could simulate a colder part of Russia such as the Kola Peninsula, and the fall textures could simulate environments in Asia such as China. Would it be possible for ED to release the terrain information for LOMAC to allow modders to create new theaters of operations for LOMAC? It would give a multitude of additonal missions and scenarios for pilots to fly.

The same could be asked about the Developer SDK's for all the aircraft models, yet the answer still remains the same from day one.

Well I am thinking what if ED releases tools for 2nd party modders to help create new theaters of war like they are doing for 3d models? Clearly they need to understand that different maps are important as well.

Why don't they release the lockon.exe source code!?

Because they want to make money.

Maybe for the successor they could get someone to continuosly create more terrain. It'd be a full time job but you could sell the addon terrain.

I think ED's tools are just commercial software (e.g. 3DMax, which they can't distribute) plus some source code (which you need VC++ to use). That's what my own tools are like - always a work in progress, very user-unfriendly. If anyone wants my tools they are welcome to them, need only to ask, but I doubt they will be able to use them.

Clearly they need to understand that different maps are important as well.

Why don't we petition ED to work on another map then? ED has been stuck with Crimea since Flanker 1.0, I think it is time to model other parts of the world as well. Just look at BF2, I know it is a joke in terms of realism, but there is a great deal of atmosphere in seeing a middle eastern or far eastern environment as opposed to the traditional US vs Russia eastern European conflicts. Also by having more than one map, you give this sim much more depth and a more epic feel by pitting pilots from various different countries against each other.

If you had a fictional middle east campaign between the United States vs "Axis of Evil" for instance, you could have Iranian MiG-29s and Syrian Su-27s sporting sandy camoflage as opposed to the traditional blue and you'd fly over beautiful desert terrain.

In the far east, you could have Chinese Su-27s and Su-30s against American or even Russian aircraft and you'd fly over majestic asian mountains.

Maybe I am just an idealist or a dreamer but I do feel like this can be a better game with not just more planes, but more importantly addon theaters!

Oh everybody agrees on that, we discussed it before and it's one of my favorite topics:

One problem is that people can't agree what the new theater should be. Just when we seemed to conclude on a logical best choice, people seemed to lose enthusiasm when it didn't turn out to be the one they personally wanted.

Which theater did you have in mind? How does it compare in square miles to the one that took ED ten years to build?

Well at least that is not a problem :)

Are you interested to create a new theater? It's a lot of programming work. We cannot simply place mountain and objects where we wish, it's necessary to organize those objects into an heirarchical "grid" for the graphics engine. Too much work for me, but I can provide you some hints to get started if you know how to write software.

Lol, no, I'm getting a headache just thinking about all the work involved.

I'll leave it up to ED ;)

On the other hand, how hard can it be to create detailed terrain? :D

What theatres have you guys discussed so far? Publically, the Middle East, SE Asia and Alaska have been regions of interest, but I don't think anyone has ever narrowed it down to an exact location.
