seba0412 Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 I know how to aquire and track my target, but how i can identyfing them from distance? For sample: In first attack i need to engage SAMs, or ZSUs, but i dont know if i track tank or truck. From what distance, and how you choose your targets? Cheating with Labels On, not helping. Maybe i schould change my displays resolution from 256 to 512 or even 1024? P.S.: Sorry for my bad English.
Thermal Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 You should be able to use the Targetting Pod out to 20 km. Might need to get closer to identify vehicles. Using the snapviews to display the mfcd fullscreen also helps alot.
Cibit Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Hey Thermal, can you tell me about teh snap views? I never was aware you could view MFD in fullscreen! BiPod Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 As thermal said above, especially the comment about using a snapview (Numpad0+Numpad6). With the Targeting Pod you can use: - DMS up and down to zoom - DMS left short to focus - China Hat forward short to narrow/expand field of view - Switch from CCD to IR If you can't identify the target using all this then your only other option is to fly closer. Cheers, BiPod.
Thermal Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 For snapviews you have two options 1. RCtrl+KP0 turns on the snap view "mode", then KPx for the various views. RCtrl+KP0 reverts. 2. LWin+KPx (press and hold to stay in the snapview, release to revert) KP = KeyPad. KP4 is the left mfcd, KP6 is the right. KP2 is the CDU.

BiPod Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 Once again.....as Thermal said above:). I will just add to point 2, that you can also hold the Numpad0 key while pressing another key instead of using the LWin key. This keeps it to a one handed operation. I strongly reccommend mapping the views to your stick if you have spare buttons. You can also change the default views, but that gets more involved. BiPod.

Slightly easier to program into the hotas, with the added bonus that other kepresses to control the sim wont get poisoned by the held down LWin key while in the view!
RichardG Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 The 256 cockpit resolution is almost worthless for visual ID.
Fin- Posted March 20, 2011 Posted March 20, 2011 The 256 cockpit resolution is almost worthless for visual ID. Not true in my opinion. I haven't had any trouble telling the general class of a given vehicle from any visual range, and barring very similar vehicles like the T-72 and T-80 I can tell the exact model way before I'm in weapons range. Resolution aside, a properly configured FLIR output goes far in identifying targets, since the default 4 gain/4 level often results in blobs with little to no discernible features other than the outline. I usually set them to about 5-6 gain and 2-3 level in clear conditions day and night, inclement weather may require different values from time to time. This provides a nice contrast for even smaller details like ERA-blocks, FCR's, armament and other turret features, wheels, rollers etc. that can aid with identification.

I agree I am using 256 as well and have no problems knowing what the target type is.
